  • Speedometer Backlight Burned Out

I wasn't sure what this question classifies as so I posted it here, if it is wrong feel free to move it to the appropriate place.

I recently just bought my first bike, a 1995 Katana 600, and I was riding it yesterday when it began to get dark and I realized that all the gauges but the speedometer lit up. This was a pretty big problem because I could not see what my speed was once it got dark. Anyway, I was wondering how easy it is to replace the bulb, if it is a bulb, and where the best place to find one would be? Thanks.

remove your instrument cluster, and the bulb should be right there in the back. just pull it out and go to the dealers with it. if none in stock, go to a car parts place. wal-mart might have it, depending on how odd it is.

try swaping the bulbs from the TACK to the SPEEDO just to make sure it is the bulb and not the wiring.

Hard to pull the speedo because of the trip reset knob . Easier to pull the front fairings and headlight , then you can easily pull the bulb out . I just replaced FIVE of those on one bike .

it might be a good idea to change them all while you are at it. it sucks to spend 30 minutes changing it (if you are not exactly sure what you are doing), only to have to do it all over again in a couple of months.

Same premise as headlight bulbs..when one goes out the other probably isnt too far behind.

i'd go with led's cost 17 bucks shipped for every light in the dash of my '92. and looks great, and will last long time.

check ebay I think they are the 194's for the 750 pre98 gauges or the 74 for the pre98 600...

I bought my 194's from here on ebay:

little pricy there.....check out Super Bright LEDs

194's for .89 and 74's for 1.19 kicker is $5.00 shipping, but takes about 2 days to get them after you order them.

they do have alot of options wide angle or regular, for my tach and speedo i went with wide angle, but i am thinking of checking into the wled 6 led one, for maybe little brighter and help show the needle better, but don't know if it will fit in the hole.

oh and you can change your turn signal indicators to leds with out changing the flashing interval.

What number LEDs do I need for just the Speedometer, Tacometer, and Fuel Gauge. Also how many LEDs would each gauge need?

Depends on the model of bike you have...on the PRE98 750's you need 3 total of the 194's...one for each gauge...correct me if I'm wrong anyone..but I also think there is one 74 bulb on the Speedo...I have to check that out..

On the PRE98 600's it is 3 of the 74 bulbs...I just did these ones recently...

Pre 750's speedo and tach each have 2 bulbs , fuel gauge has one , but it's a littler bulb . Same size as the little indicator bulbs .

                              this is what i used...i have a pre98 750.

like md says...2 bulbs in tach and speedo

since yours is a pre98 600 and has the large fuel gauge....take your windscreen off and look how many bulb sockets go into each instrument, and then order than many.

Better yet, take the instrument cluster off and pull them apart and for the large bulbs get the WLEDs(194) and for the smaller bulbs get the W74. The colored bulbs cordinate with the color that they show when lit, privides a better and brighter view of them.
