  • Ok another dig on the Katana....

I subscribe to SuperStreet bike and Two Wheel Tuner...I like both mags but sometimes they write up crap about the Katana...I subscribe to both because of the vendors..I like the pics of the stuff I see and then can take the pictures of the parts I want and make them at my dad's shop...anyways once again Two Wheel Tuner mentions the Kat but two readers were asking where to get upgrade parts...their answer was to upgrade to a GSXR also the picture they put wasn't very nice....oh well I'll try to post the article when I get my scanner working....

The second was SuperStreet Bike...they don't dog on the Kat they usually put pictures of peoples Kats in their magazine...the problem I had with this one is that the Kat they put in there was really outrageous...I like the Streetfigher look but man that was rediculous....I'll post the article of that one later also...

Why can't we get modded Kats like watari's Frankenkat in there or some of the other modded kats....

    Just my $.02..

It's common to see that opinion in the press. And, let's face it, if you ride GSXR's and R1's all the time, by comparison, the Kat does feel heavy and virtually asthmatic. But that's all because they are comparing it to bikes that are track-tuned performance machines, being evaluated in a specific role. Compare it to another budget sports-tourer in the same general price range (say a Kawasaki Concours) and it suddenly shines.

To quote my own Webpage :

Personally, I think the bike suffers more from the economies of price competition than from inherently boring or poor design. To achieve the price-point that this motorcycle sells for, Suzuki cuts a few corners here and there, and this is to be expected for such a low entry price into the 600 class. Fortunately for us, virtually every such corner that was snipped can be rectified easily (and cheaply) enough to make it a bike worthy of the high praise it commands. Don't think the Can-A-Tuna deserves praise? It ranked 38th in Bike Magazine's top 100 bikes of all time, according to a reader survey of over 10,000 entries (although, to be fair, it was the only bike that made both the 100 best list and the 10 worst bike list in the same issue).
So how can you justify a bike that made both the best bike and the worst bike list? Isn't that a true contradiction? Well, yes, and no. As it ships stock from the factory, with it's old-tech GSX-750 motor and lean carborator settings, it's pretty crappy tires and it's generic rain catching seat, it deserves to be on the worst list. But stick in around $700 worth of upgrades into it, and suddenly you have a bike that handles with the best of them, tours like a demon and is good for 600 mile days, accelerates and stops hard enough to catch eyes (and astound your friends who think poorly of the Katana). Basically, installing such upgrades elevates into a new class (and thus, those who have driven it upgraded are the ones who voted it to the best bikes list). The only thing that really can't be cheaply remedied is the curb weight, and for off-track, real-world sport touring, that same weight bias provides a stable, robust sport touring platform, helping soak up bumps and potholes, while keeping the traction going to the road. More-over, if you look closely at the performance specifications, this bike produces almost the same or slightly betters specs than you would find on any early 90's sports 600.
Now there inevitably people out there who will say, hey why buy a Katana, since this or that model motorcycle is better for (insert desire: long-haul touring, inner-city commuting, canyon carving, weekend beach trips). Actually, it's probably true that there is a better contender in each and every category. BUT there is no other motorcycle as well versed to all of these roles available at anything approaching the same price point, even after you factor in the upgrade costs. You can pick up a Katana for $6250 out the door if you shop wisely (tax, tag, title and transfer fees included), and even cheaper if you're willing to take one a year or two old but still brand new-in-box. Willing to go used? Get one with a few thousand miles in good shape for $4500 or less.
    Cheers,

Ive got an inside connection to 2WT (2 Wheel Tuner) magazine. While their mag focuses mainly on exotic sport bikes and mods that most average people wont get to do anytime soon, we might be able to get them to alittle spot on the Kat if we can put something together.

CP 'hit the nail on the head'. if you write & test bikes for a living riding a katana is probably a chore. If you strickly go by MSRP the katana is an old school bike with a hefty price. look at the sv650, zzr600 etc. etc.
( they don't factor in what you can get it for OTD )

moding the bike is more a labor of love - i'd say i did everything to my kat to make it perform better without tearing down the motor. if you consider the price of the bike & what you would have spent to have the work i did ( at a shop ) and pay retail for everything. your better off starting on a better platform. like an older f4, yzf etc.

for me the biggest draw is that my skills grew with the bike. i could have gotten into a lot more trouble on a more flickable bike. we don't all have 100% control of our right hand all the time. it's a great bike to learn on ( just wish they'd update the frame ! )

I've got a few old bike mags laying around and in several of the brit mags there have been positive write ups on the Katana over the last few years. Although the styling is usually questioned the bike still get's decent reviews when taken for what it is and not compared to bike's it can't hope to compete against performance wise.

Everybody is into different things I guess. If your a squid your under high pressure from the other squids so you dont have the balls to have your own opinion on something. same goes for the HD crowd. I really love my 750F and at this point wont trade it for another more modern bike. I dont give a shit what anyone thinks of says about the Kat. It is true for under 1000bucks you can mod the bike and it will be totally diff than stock. Like trinc said it is a labor of love..Id like to buy another and start all over.....

              Let's do it...

I think if we can focus on some of the more "exotic" Kats we can show were in the ball park of some of the more "popular" bikes.

I love the look of my Kat, even though a lot of people think its ugly. I'd put a new engine in it before I'd get a new one.

I love the Kat... I've dreamed of the day I would have my Katana ever since the late 80's... I was about to get one when Saddam had to be an assh*le... Air Force transfered me to Bahrain... and the dream was quickly over... til NOW... The local dealers tried to turn me to GSXR's but I was determined... After searching many shops that didn't even have a single poor girl in their show room cause of all the dang GSXR's, a dealer actually spoke well of the Kat and had them shipping in constantly... So I bought...

Just passed BRC on my stock 2003 GSX600F. Had a great time. There were a few GSXrs there with one 1100 Kaw. Half dozen Harleys. My bike, I thought, was the best looking of the street bikes. I haven't rode anything else on the street (only dirt). I am having a ball learning on this bike. I cant see myself on anything else right now or in the next four or five years. Kats Rock. I feel very stable on her, and have had no problems cornering like I thought I might. I am no Knee dragger(yet) Just like the feeling of riding. Had a 35 mile ride from Germantown to Anacostia (sp) in the rain (lite) it handled great. Made it there and back. I even concored the box during the class.

You know...I actually had someone that writes for Streetfighter magazine contact me about doing a writeup on the frankenkat. Needless to say I was pretty flattered they would even considered. Might take him up on it soon

                        Katana.

I agree with everyone, I love my katana and could easily have what ever I wanted like a gsxr or busa etc. It is everything I need in a bike and goes more than fast enough. I didn't buy it to compare to anyone elses bike, I would rather ride a scooter than sit around and compare the tassle length on my v'twins ape hangers. And like you all have said you can always modify. I may have gone to the extreme end of the scale similar to waltari and others but thats what it's all about.

Ending up with what somthing that makes you happy.

IF you all want too, I can contact 2WT and ask them if they'd be interested in doing a segment on some of the great kats we've got here in katriders. Waltari, bearkat, and anyone else with a tricked out katana just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I'll put together alittle writeup and send it to my contact at 2WT.. I'll include a few pics to try and "peak their curiousity" and see what they think. No promises though, because since they deal mainly with high power, mega expensive, and mainly exotic sportbikes they might not appreciate all the fine work done by our members like we all do here.

I'll put something together by this weekend and see what happens.
