I work in a bank and one of my customers told me a weird thing about getting an accident. Is it true that if you get in an accident and you hit your helmet on the ground, dont remove your helmet. He told me that your brain swells so much that if your remove your helmet, your brain will crack your skull. So he told me to keep the helmet on for like atleast one hour to keep the skull strong. Is this true?

Your brain ain't gonna crack your skull . But you COULD get a brain bruise (concussion) from your brain sloshing around . Mainly , you leave the helmet on because if there's a CHANCE your neck is broken or something , you don't wanna be yankin your head around .

I would tend to say that the reason you dont remove the helmet has more to do with possible spinal fractures. As a matter of fact there is no immediate need to remove the helmet unless there is breathing problems. Even then spinal immobilization techniques should be used.2006 Kat 600

Your brain ain't gonna crack your skull Rolling Eyes
other people are trying to remove it, Stop them, advise them to open
or remove your visor, so you can get clean air. Wait for the people who
are trained for helmet removal.
Yes it's about the neck and head injury, mostly the neck, cevical bones.'Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and sometimes it rains" !

if you fall off the bike and smack your head on the ground, but feel ok enough to walk around, and pick your bike up, take your helmet off (after you are out of the path of any cars). if you smack into a car, make sure someone calls an ambulance. stay still and leave the lid on!

Everyone above me covered the reasons you don't remove the helmet (basically, risk of adding damages to a neck/back injury).
Brain swelling from a serious impact is a serious possibility, but that swelling isn't going to break bones -- and in fact, if you're lucky enough to get to a hospital in time (and unlucky enough to have brain swelling), the surgeons there may crack or saw your skull intentionally to let the brain have more room until the swelling subsides. The reason helmets have the padding they have is to reduce the likelihood of brain swelling by cushioning the impact as much as possible in a controlled manner (brain swelling happens when your brain smashes against the inside of the skullbones too hard to begin with).

it's B.S., as an ER Nurse, its all about spinal immobilization as already mentioned above. if your brain is swelling that much, the helmet is the least of your problem.

If you're brain was that large, you would have never bought a vulcan, oh wait you didnt, so I guess you are smart, eh ! ..just pickin on ya buddy
Really though, as the others mentioned...you never never remove the helmet of a rider who's gone down. Let the emergency personal take care of them by immobilizing the head/neck/spine on a backboard and then let the hospital personnel remove the helmet when they are ready. In fact you can get decals that go on your helmet that say " if rider involved in accident, do not remove helmet"

I have worked in emergency wards for years.
Never take your helmet off or let someone else remove it post accident. If by yourself, leave it on and seek medical advice asap. Always carry a phone. WAIT FOR THE AMBULANCE.
There are courses you can take to learn how to safely remove a helmet, you sould not have to. If you need to administer cpr or resusitation then it is a give in, spinal injury or death??
Not enough people learn basic first aid. Too many people give bills%$t advice.
