My wife's ex-boyfriend rode a Ninja and the other day, she told me that he used to put alcohol in his fuel tank with the gas every so often. Can anyone tell me what that's about? Is it advisable?

I used to put methyl hydrate (or alcohol) in my gas tank in the car during the winter to remove any water in the gas/tank

Maybe he meant he used ethanol-mixed fuels.
The Kat can use a small amount of alcohol (ethanol/methanol) mixed into the fuel (see your owner's manual for percentages), but if you have the choice to avoid it on a typical motorcycle of any sort, you should.
Alcohol attracts water (hygroscopic) and since the Kat doesn't have a vapor-sealed fuel tank like modern cars do, it means it can pull water out of the ambient air (which then gathers at the bottom of the tank and induces rust). In winter, this hygroscopic issue has a secondary undesirable effect: the water content can cause your fuel passages get blocked by frozen water, especially in the smaller passages in a carb when the engine is stone cold (first start of the day).
