  • Simple Oil Change my #&*

So, I decided that with the 70 degree weather, I would break down and change my oil. I've got everything I need, or so I thought. Oil, filter, torque wrench (own two now...further grrr), drain pan, hex sockets (make my life easier)....oh wait! The 17mm socket you have it TOO SMALL. Ok. No problem. I'll just wait until this weekend and get a larger set. Besides, I need it for the chain adjustment because the stealership either did a crappy job just last september, It's just a really loose chain, or it's time to replace it. Either way, I don't have a driver big enough for the axle nut. Put the lower plastic back on before I park the bike again...

Now, I noticed when I took the plastic off that it was beat up. I mean bad. Someone bottomed this thing out a few times and it wasn't me. No big deal. It's getting repainted this fall/winter anyway I hope. Well look at that. It fell apart...the center piece, that joins the two halves together, it busted off...no wonder it looked odd when I took it off...

An oil change has just become an expensive thing...who said this was supposed to be easy again??? And can someone tell me what size socket I'm going to need for the drain plug and axle nut? None of my books say.

Wow tought luck dude. Just imagine if you'd given the bike to the dealership and all this had happened. They'd have charged you a bomb to just put it all back together.

    Good luck.

the rear axle should be 22mm if its the same as mine. i to had to go buy one no big deal though craftsmen has it for 4$. get a 22mm closed end wrench to while your at. i like using the big wrench to break a heavy torque like the rear axle. its on there at 100nm, but a socket wrench would be fine too i guess.

the drain pan i thought was 17mm? i know its kinda big but a socket in one of my sets worked fine no problems

my bike is a 98+ so it needs a 21mm, don't know if the older bike is a different size.

Since you're probably going to change the oil when its' warm, do yourself a favor and wrap the exhaust pipe(s) just under the oil filter with aluminum foil. It helps reduce the eternal oil burning smell and smoke. I don't understand why you need to remove the belly pan, unless you're worried about oil dripping down from the filter. But, the aluminum foil takes care of most, if not all, of that.

Also, make sure you are aligned on both sides of the rear when you adjust the chain. I believe there are "tick" marks on the swing arms to assist you with keeping the same position on both sides.

                      Good luck....

Good time to consider installing a Fumoto oil drain valve... $25 and you'll never need a torque wrench to change the oil again.

                        Cheers,

Mine's not a 17. That's the biggest one I have and it's too small. I'm seriously considering the Fumoto valve.

As for the belly pan, I'm a big guy and I didn't want any clearance issues. Besides, I finally got a good look at my headers. Not to mention that I just wanted to do it.

Mine was a 21mm when it was still there (pre-Fumoto).

The Fumoto won't give you any clearance problems when installed -- it's no taller than the ridge on the oil pan now.

It does make it alittle easier to work under the bike if you take them off. I usually take mine off if for no other reason than its a good time to get the dirt and rocks out from inside or between where the 2 pieces come together, and then give them a good wash down.
