went with a friend of mine to pick up her first bike today. she picked up an 83 gs550 for $200.
It needs some TLC, but it is a nice little bike to fix up. needs paint for sure, a good tune-up....and a few little comestics, but nothing serious. gas tank is shot and have to locate one of those....but shouldn't be too hard to find...hopeful. she just signed up for her msf course, so by time she is done that, the bike should be ready.
It is the same as this one. the pic is a 86...but the 83 is essentially the same.
I will post a "before" pic soon.
I like it cz it looks a bit like the old school kats. not quite, but similar. can't go wrong for $200

Dented or rusted or both? Any bubbling on the exterior paint of the tank?

              Cheers,

it was in storage for a year and a half....and when you open the gas cap, it is full of corrosion. there is bubbling on the exterior for sure. the owner said it leaks like a sive (spelling?). humidity got the best of it.

I grew up around a bodyshop...so I know rust when I see it...and this thing is rusty. I am going to start stripping the bike down today, and if I have time I will give it a good sandlasting to see just how bad off it is. There is a place near me that is supposed to be able to do wonders with gas tanks and radiators, so I will give them a try. Just thought it would be easier if I could find a replacement.

If anyone knows where to find an appropriate tank for that particular model, I'd expect they would.
