  • 14 Tooth sprocket installed...I'm not sure I like it?

Well, all this talk of Sprocket changes and wheekies 'n stuff has been chewing at me so, last Friday I did it. After speaking with the service tech at my local shop, I decided to install a 14 tooth front sprocket.

    I don't think I like it...
...but I don't know exactly why.

I installed in conjunction with a K&N filter and I must say that the difference was immediate and impressive.

From a full stop the bike accelerates to near redline with little effort. It's as though the bike shed 100 pounds. Of course, with the engine already into the low to mid nine thousand RPMs , the rest of the gears are quickly eaten up, and your speed is now registering in the rediculous zone. With the engine now sucking fresh air through it better that ever before, it has aquired a hyper high pitch that almost hurts the ears. Like wise, the exhaust tone coming out of the Carbon Fibre slip on has also changed. It has a sharper tone but still deep. Kind of like a big caliber hand gun going off, inches from your ear.

Now all of that is great. It's exactly what I was hoping for...except...

...I can't stop riding like I'm in a GP race. I was out on three occasions since this weekends conversion, for a total of about 4 hours riding, and all of it at "SuperSonic".

Combined with the new tires I installed a couple of weeks ago and the change in rake, from lowering the front end, this bike handles spectacularly well.

So why don't I like it?

The desire to ride it like I stole it is very strong. Too strong. That's why I didn't buy a SS bike in the first place.

I guess it just reinforces the phrase "Becareful what you wish for. You might just get it."

Ya just can't please everybody can ya Really though, as good an all around bike as the Kat is, it just goes to show with alittle modification it can be as much as you want it to be, and in your case maybe alittle more

It's just the windshield that's doing it. You'll get use to it.

i just posted this in another thread...then saw this one so i'll share here... last year i changed mine 1 down in front 6 up in rear. I like it. Ya you said if you wanted that much accel , you would have gotten a SS, BUT the way i look at it is, now i have MUCH more acceleration. Its just shy of pulling front wheel up when i launch as fast and hard as the bike will let me. Try doing that with an SS and keep the whele down. of course those bikes will catch up really fast lol.

I lost about 20mph off top speed ( 141 down to 120). I've tested it two times. I dont like going that fast, hence the reason behind the change.

              up six!

I woulds think that it would accelerate like a farm tractor.

Honestly, I find the change exciting, and awe inspiring. But, it certainly demands that I be very attentive. Bad things can happen very fast and I'm still riding a 500lb. bike that doesn't stop like it's lighter cousins.

As for keeping the front wheel down...well it'll lift in first gear without much effort, but it still feels a bit weighty in through second.

We'll see how it goes over the next few weeks. That'll determine wether I keep it that way.

you will now find the weakness in the suspension. start saving - the faster you ride the more important it is to keep it stable.

stop thinking about it, you can NEVER go back.

All this talk about the sprockets has got me interested. Aside from the sprocket...is there anything else that I have to get with it? Keep in mind my Kat is completely stock. Also, approximately how much am I looking at spending on the project?

If I'm not riding, I'm thinking about it...my GF is going to kill me if I log onto this website one more time

sprocket is probably no more that 25 bux.

you can get a new pipe, many to choose from..ranging in price 100-600 bux

and a jet kit...thats what i am getting, Ivans Performance jet kit..around 125 bux.

If I just get the sprocket will I notice the improvement or is it pointless without some other mods?

Try 2 or 3 up on the back with that and that it when you really have fun.. but it really sucks on the highway I just swap the back sproket back to factory if I am going long distance
