  • Gas Question

My neighbor owns a HD, and I was talkin' to him a bit yesterday before I told him I was running down to get some gas.. He asked if I put super in it, and being this is the first time I'm going to be putting gas in it, I was like, "well, you know what, I'm not sure."

I've heard some people say if you put the 93 in it, then you have to all the time, but is that just for cars/trucks? Or does that go for bikes as well? What do you all use and why?

If you check your owners manual it tells you the level of octane you should be using. I know that for me it is regular unleaded.

I know gas grades are different in Canada vs US. Here in Canada we can use Regular 87 (89?) Octane fuel.

Higher octane is for engines that have high compression ratio. High octan is basically prevent premature explosion in the cylinder head. The katana engine does not have this high compression ratio, and hence can not benefit from high octane rating. I use 87 octane myself.

Higher octane burns slower, so if the engine doesn't have the aforementioned higher compression ratio, it can actually cause a power loss.

You can switch between octanes when ever you want. If you put in 93 octane there is no reason that you can't use 87 after that. Mid grade fuel is actualy a blend of higer and lower octane fuels.

                THIS IS TRUE!
buy the LOWEST grade...but from a REPUTABLE station.

The recommended octane rating for the 98+ Katana is 87. You won't see any benefit of using higher octane fuels unless you have pinging with you engine.

what happens if you have mods like a pipe, jetkit and the like? I've been putting 93 in my bike for as long as I can remember. One time in a pinch in NJ I had to put 87 in it,but it was from a station that just said gas on the sign I think it might have been a low budget Coastal station..Well after that the bike pinged and chattered until I found a Mobil and topped it off. Ever since I've always put 93 in.Givin todays prices I might give 87 another chance or 89. let me know if anyones had any problems with 87 and Mods on the Kat.

Ive had the problem slayer ,87 octane doesn't cut it mine runs like a POS on it. My buddy did'nt believe me so I let drive my bike for 1 hour with the good fuel in it (91) while I rode his 05 600RR, I then put 5$ of 87 octane in my bike and sure enough he was shocked it made that much of diff. I will not use it no matter how expensive fuel is.

Why not just try the low then try the mid and compare?

Last year during the hurricanes when it was difficult to get gas of any kind I had to fill the bike up on mid-grade (90?). The tank was pretty much dead empty (I was on reserve) and the bike has always run on premium throughout it's entire life. Lemme tell you, my Kat did not like the mid-grade fuel. It really ran poorly and backfired for the first time ever. Anyway, since I eventually needed the gas more for the generator I siphoned it out. When things calmed down I refilled with premium and after a couple of rides the bike was back to normal. I dunno, is it possible that if you always fill up with premium for 4+ years and then change to al lower grade it'll affect the bike more? Just a thought.
