  • I crashed my Katana on my birthday

I wiped out on my birthday Wednesday night. A group of six bikes were on the way home from a bike night event at Quaker Steak & Lube in Pinellas Park, FL. I was the 5th bike that made it through an intersection. The 6th bike caught the light though. I slowed down and began to pull over to wait for him. As I pulled over towards the curb, I realized too late that there was a drop from the roadway to the gutter area due to several re-pavements of the road causing an uneven roadway. I fell into the gutter area and the front tire bounced back and forth from the pavement to the curb before I wiped out doing approximately 35 mph. I was violently thrown down onto the sidewalk head and shoulder first causing my collarbone to break in two places. I flopped down the sidewalk like a rag doll before coming to a complete stop. Beause I was wearing my helmet, gloves, and long pants, I came out practically scratch-free. I have three abrasions on my left knee, a bruise on my forehead and the broken collarbone. The bike needs a new master cylinder because a corner was shaved off, new turn signal cover, new crank case cover that was shaved down and leaks oil, and a new rear brake foot pedal. Everything else is just road rash like on the mirror, end bar, right side fairing, right side of rear fairing, lower fairing, and the muffler pipe and canister.
Now I have to wear a sling for 6 to 8 weeks before I can fix the bike and get riding again. I must tell you all that the helmet definitely saved my life.

Everyone please ride safe and always wear proper gear!

That really sucks Negster, sorry to hear you broke the collarbone. Look at it this way, now you can get some clear alternatives lenses an aftermarket can and some new riding gear. Might put a little dent in your wallet though. Heal quick and take care.

How did you get a bruise on your head if you were wearing a helmet?

          Cheap helmet with no padding?

Dude did you see the pics. It looks like he landed straight on his head. You are truly lucky you had that helmet on. It was scraped up pretty bad.

Hope you heal quickly. What a bummer birthday present.

Man that sucks, glad you are ok. That is a lot of rash I didn't even have that much and I hit the pavment doing 70mph. Broke my collar bone too so I know how you feel. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

First, I'm really sorry to hear of your spill.

The good news is that collar bones usually heal up stronger than when they started (and your bike doesn't look too bad for wear). The bad news is that collar bones rarely heal up as pretty as they were before (not that many people notice on men).

Quaker Steak and Lube on Wednesdays? There's usually drinking involved by too many riders to make me feel comfy riding away from there with anyone -- were you zero tolerance, or had you been imbibing?

                      Cheers,

i broke my collar bone and it was displaced, the hospital decided it was the least of my worries at the time and didnt bother to set it. basically the bone looked like _- . it healed up great but has a big knot where the bones joined back together. also causing my left shoulder to be an inch shorter than my right... ive never noticed it but other people say they can tell, doesnt bother me though but just something you should be ready for incase you have the same problems.

a friend of my mother broke his collar bone and for whatever reason the bones didnt heal right. the bones were displaced the same as mine but didnt join back together. they said the ends of the bone basically healed over so now his collar bone is in two pieces. he needs surgery to cut the bone then pin them together to get it to heal again.

I completely agree, he was lucky to be wearing the helmet. It definately saved his life.

But after doing a search on eBay for Vega helmets I see that they can be purchased brand new from numerous online stores for $50us. I'm wondering if a better quality of helmet would have reduced the bruising/injury to the head.

All that counts is that you were wearing something on your noggin.

I have the same thing - took a monster wipeout on my downhill race bike (mountain bike), and rolled over on my left shoulder. When mine split, it fractured....Take two fingers on one hand, spread them slightly, with fingerprints towards you...then take your opposing pointer, and slide it between the other two until until it's tip is about even with the other two's first knuckle. Imagine that's a solid bone. Now try to move all three fingertips towards your body, and watch the -= break in the middle...That's essentially how mine went. It healed REAL quick - about 3-4 weeks until I could lightly use my arm - but it was never set by the doctor, and now I have about a 5-10 degree bend in the bone, and it sticks out a bit. Fortunately...my shoulders and arms all seem to be fairly symmetrical still!
