  • 936 lb's???? THE FACTORY PLATES THAT MAY LIE

i own an 88 kat 600 and yesterday after riding home from work i noticed underneath the handlebars the factory plate that has the vin # the year it was built ect. on the plate it say gvwr which stands for (gross vehicle weight rating) as i believe. aside of that is says something like 936lbs ok strange enough. below it says the front and rear weights the front says something like 350 lbs and the rear is around 500lbs. i always thought the total bike weighs around 450 lbs. do i have some kinda of martian kat that is not of this planet that weighs an excessive amount?? although i dont feel it can be right. i am not a skinny wimpy person and i can lift well lift and slide the back end of the bike. i dont think if the rear weighed 500 lbs i would be able to lift it with 1 arm. what is the deal are these plates lieing to me or is the kat truely that heavy??

Gross Vehicle Weight includes rider(s) and cargo.

I am in the process of restoring an 88 and I can promise you that they don't weight that much!

The GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, as was pointed out by Danimal) is the total rated load the motorcycle's suspension, frame and subcomponents are designed to handle. The front and rear weights are the weights the tires need to be able to take (also listed in the owners manual by weight codes). This is not to say the motorcycle weighs that much, but that with the weight of the motorcycle, fuels, oil, battery, rider, passenger, cargo, etc., the total weight of the bike can never safely exceed the GVWR.

The GVWR is a required statement for any road-legal wheeled vehicle in the USA (and most other countries), including motorcycles, cars, trucks, trailers, etc.

            Cheers,
