most guys will tell you that a steering dampener on a katana is useless, because of how stable the front end is. and ill tell you, from experience.... ive come down from a wheelie at 40-50mph with the handle bars turned all the way to the right.... wobbled back and forth a couple times and straightened out quickly. no biggie (dont try it!)

Thats a good piont, I have a problem with the wheel wobbling a little if I dont get the front high enough on my 03, My wife 92 does it reguardless, do you think a dampner would help.

Jason I'm from clearwater, have you done anything to help get your bike up, I have a problem getting it high enough, I loose all my torgue before it gets high enough. I currently cruz about 5ish mph rev it almost redline and pop the clutch to get it up.

And I'm one of those guys. The steering geometry and long wheelbase is naturally calming to any upsetting oscillations that occur in the front end, unlike many sport replicas which can be so twitchy that they oscilations, if induced, get worse. Thus, normally a steering damper is uncalled for and unneeded. About the only time you might need one is if you dropped the front end and raised the rear (effectively changing the rake angle compared to the ground).

PS - if you're getting oscillations that you're not inducing, something else is wrong, such as bad wheel bearings, a bent wheel, bent front axle, etc.

        Cheers,

To answer the initial question, Ohlins makes a damper that they suggest for the Katana. They only list one damper on the site so it is probably universal.

Speedee's website says he has an "NHK" steering damper on his bike, but since he closed all his links, I have no more information for that.

Personally, I would prefer to damp my steering rather than dampen it. Why do you guys want to get your steering wet anyways?

It is amazing how often people make that mistake.

damp·en Audio pronunciation of "dampen" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (dmpn)
                v. damp·ened, damp·en·ing, damp·ens
                v. tr.

                1. To make damp.
                2. To deaden, restrain, or depress: “trade moves... aimed at dampening protectionist pressures in Congress” (Christian Science Monitor).
                3. To soundproof.

I don't get it what wrong with dampen?
                Or were you guys kidding?

Many people get it wrong... I know I did for the longest time.

Sorry guys, I couldn't resist. We have shimmy dampers on airplanes because the steerable nosewheels have such short linkages that they oscillate like crazy without. Most pilots still call them "dampeners" and I ALWAYS give them a hard time. Must be my Catholic School education. Twelve years of nuns beating my knuckles for bad grammar.

I also NEVER need to spell check.

I can say that ive tried to put a damper on my bike and I had no luck. I got a stock damper off a tlr and it was way to short of a stroke. The steering from lock to lock on kats is long, way longer than the tlr's damper could travel!
Um I dont know any wise quotes so go read katansoldiers quote in his signature!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I find the front to be very stable as well. I landed a wheelie on the taxi-way last summer, and I had my bars turned a tad bit, and they lined right back up with no wobble at all.
