  • Cruise Control / Throttle Lock question

I own a 95 kat 750 and have been looking at adding a Cruise control for my ride to work (+30 miles on highway - 70 mph speed limit). Not for hard core touring but making the ride a bit easier on the wrist...

    Found these...

Not sure of the difference in the last 2...anyway...

anyone have any experience with these models or have any recommendations (better prices / ect..) for a different brand / model???

You can also look up the Throttlemeister. It replaces your bar ends and runs less of a risk of catching on your gloves. It is $120 though.

I run the ThrottleMeisters. Bonus that you can get heavier-than-stock versions that replace your bar-ends, and visually no cop will ever know, just in case you run into a jurisdiction that doesn't permit them. They've grown on me over the two years I've had them, but for the first year I constantly said that I should have gone with the Vista Cruiser version. I've used the NEP on previous single-throttle cable bikes (which yours is; 98+ kats aren't), and was very please with it. For that price, you can't go wrong as long as you install it right. Not sure which NEP to get? Track down the manufacturer and ask -- the sizing difference would be based on the diameter of the throttle grip sleeve.

I have been using the Vista cruise control for 4 years and love it. It is not effective if the highway you are on is very hilly because it does not compensate for that. But, I have used it on flat boring interstates for a solid ten minutes to rest my right hand on the tank. Good Luck.

I don't think there is any type of throttle lock available for the Kat that will compensate. They all just hold the throttle where you set it. I may be wrong.

There's a company out of Australia that makes an actual cruise-control (rather than a throttle lock), which keeps your speed constant, controlling RPM's and tranny output, with safety cut-outs that get wired into the clutch sensor and brake lights. Taint cheap at about $600 US, nor simple to install (lots of sensors and wiring additions), but it's hyper effective.

Standard for the Kat is about the weight of the stock ones. The heavy version adds another 1/4 to 1/3rd of the base weight onto the bar ends, which is supposed to promote less vibration at the handlebars (same as filling the hollow extenders with lead or shot, etc). If you do a search here on KR for "harmonic vibration cyberpoet" you'll find the whole deal on how bar-end and bar-weight affect the vibration at your hands.

                    Cheers,

ahh, the ever knowledgable one, CP. Thx as always. Don't really have any issues w/ vibration, so I guess standard is good to go

One of the options they have is polished vs. standard. IMHO: take the polished. If you ever drop the bike, it's far easier to buff out any scratches than it would be to fill them and repaint them smoothly.

Don't know, just doesn't look like a good idea to have the throttle locked. In a panic situation you may try to brake while the rear end keeps pushing. I've done that without having the trottle locked (moved my fingers so fast to grab the brake that the throttle didn't backed out).

You can over-ride the throttle lock easily -- twisting the grip forward will either release the lock or will let the throttle slide past the lock. But if you are still a new rider, yes, you can get caught out (ditto if someone screws with your lock when you're not looking).
