I added a thread to my local sport bike owners page this week about how the Katana gets no respect and that it does the job it was designed for with flying colors and leaves the VFR in its wake when it comes to 'bang for the buck'. I got several replies, none were bad, but the one below just cracked me up because I have ridden with this guy and he just LOVES super sport bikes and couldn't understand why I was looking at Katanas two years ago. Looks like some props are finally coming the Kats way...
"I have always had a thing for Katanas. I like bikes that are a little different from the cookie-cutter, rank and file.
I think a lot of people were put off by the Kat's, er, um, unusual (yea that's it) styling, especially the early ones. But for all-around, do-everything bikes, they're tough to beat. VFR's get all the attention, but you could buy a CBR1000RR ($11,299) for less than what one of the new Vtec, ABS VFRs goes for ($11,488). Or two Katanas. Ok, at $6,999 that's an exagerration, but not by enough, really.
Also, the Kat uses a detuned GSXR engine, and with as reliable as GSXR's are, understressing the motor can only inrease its longevity.
I've actually been eyeing the new Kats down at D&L lately. I still miss my sportbikes some days, but after my 929RR, I realize I have no use for a top-end hypersport bike. It was too focused. Like driving a Ferrari to the grocery store. The suspension on the thing didn't even start to feel right until I was well past the legal limit. (Not that I would ever do that *cough*)
Besides, after 30 minutes on the 929, I was ready to not be riding anymore. After I rode it to Lincoln, Neb, (2.5 hours), I didn't even want to look at the damn thing.
But, when I sit on a Katana 750, I think, "California isn't THAT far away.""
