  • Katana gets props

I added a thread to my local sport bike owners page this week about how the Katana gets no respect and that it does the job it was designed for with flying colors and leaves the VFR in its wake when it comes to 'bang for the buck'. I got several replies, none were bad, but the one below just cracked me up because I have ridden with this guy and he just LOVES super sport bikes and couldn't understand why I was looking at Katanas two years ago. Looks like some props are finally coming the Kats way...

"I have always had a thing for Katanas. I like bikes that are a little different from the cookie-cutter, rank and file.

I think a lot of people were put off by the Kat's, er, um, unusual (yea that's it) styling, especially the early ones. But for all-around, do-everything bikes, they're tough to beat. VFR's get all the attention, but you could buy a CBR1000RR ($11,299) for less than what one of the new Vtec, ABS VFRs goes for ($11,488). Or two Katanas. Ok, at $6,999 that's an exagerration, but not by enough, really.

Also, the Kat uses a detuned GSXR engine, and with as reliable as GSXR's are, understressing the motor can only inrease its longevity.

I've actually been eyeing the new Kats down at D&L lately. I still miss my sportbikes some days, but after my 929RR, I realize I have no use for a top-end hypersport bike. It was too focused. Like driving a Ferrari to the grocery store. The suspension on the thing didn't even start to feel right until I was well past the legal limit. (Not that I would ever do that *cough*)

Besides, after 30 minutes on the 929, I was ready to not be riding anymore. After I rode it to Lincoln, Neb, (2.5 hours), I didn't even want to look at the damn thing.

But, when I sit on a Katana 750, I think, "California isn't THAT far away.""

I'm not going to give mine up anytime soon. I think I'll turn mine into a Kabana when I'm ready for a bigger bike.

Had a similar conversation at Bike Night last weekend... All the guys trying to rag on the Kats because they're riding Ninja-this or CBR-that... But when I mentioned that I do 600 to 1000 mile days, they shut right up. Point out the luggage racks for the Givi, the custom seat and the throttle lock, and guys were nodding in agreement... Especially when I stayed at the head of the pack in the ride-out (ha!)

Cyber I wasnt invited to bike night?

Actually I now ride a zx9r which is as big as a katana 750 is very comfortable like my Kat and has um...... 123 hp to the wheel. but the suspension is a little stiff the old zx9's were big and comfy before they started making superbikes so small. I am waiting for the Kat to go big and I will buy another one. I want a Katana 1000. fuel injected period.

I don't mind doing 600 miles days on a GSXR but when I had a Katana it was definitely more comfy and I was more relaxed when I got there! I still enjoy hyper sport bikes too much to not have one, so a Kat for the wife and a hyper sport for me will be the ticket!

                    NOTHING wrong with Katanas........

Let them underate and put them down (GSXR based and sound, change the cams and viola).

It keeps the Squidwards from wrecking these and driving the insurance skyhigh like most the other sport bikes out there...

I have had a bunch.. but my all time fav is my wife's 89 katana 1100 (1127)
Only gripe is I wished it had a 6th gear
Anyone have a spare tranny from their 750?

Love the button controlled windshield, the factory hard bags (german).
The corbin saddle makes it a definate long hauler.

In florida if the bike is under $10k you don't have to have insurance. Its a gamble. A neighbors kid bought a 2005 gixxer rode it to Gainsville to party came out the next morning and it was gone he had only made 2 payments. No insurance so he is stuck with it.
