  • Thought I'd heard it all

Outside on break today, beautiful day, about 55 degrees and sunny.. talking to a coworker who's BF is in the bike club I ride with from time to time. He's got an 05 Gixxer 1000, nitrous, steel braided lines, air shifter, lowerd, the whole 9, beautiful fast bike.. but anywho, she's never ridden in her life save for on 4 wheelers now and then and all off the sudden she comes up to me today and says "Hey guess what", Im like, what ? I just bought a bike!! Im like REALLY ? as my interest is now peaked... yeah I finally decided to start riding, Im tired of being left out from his bike stuff..blah blah blah.. so I went out to ray wilt honda/yamaha/suzuki ( one of the local dealers around here) and put money down on an '06 Pearl White HAYABUSA !!!

I told her I said, and keep in mind I know this girl fairly well, Are you freekin nuts !!! I proceeded to tell her how this bike will top 200 mph right outta the crate, fastest production bike, not a good starter bike, insurance will be thru the roof, etc. She's like nah I can handle it, Im a girl and dont have the need for speed and the ego to boot like the guys do. I just want a hot bike !

I told her you really outta consider starting out on a much smaller bike, and a pre owned one at that to learn on, take the MSF course, you know all the usual talk you give to a prospective new rider.

She was hearing none of it. " I want a busa, its pretty, and I got it, I can't wait to ride"

UGH !! Im just hoping I dont come to work one day and read about her in the morning paper.

I like the girl, she's cool and we get along and hang out at breaks and stuff with everyone else..and Im certainly not gonna stop being her friend or anything..but geez a decision like that to get a bike of that magnitude when you've never ridden just blows my mind. !!

Wow...what a story...I saw that white one at the show and I agree it is a beautiful bike...I hope she lives long enough to enjoy it...I knew of a guy who did something similar....bought a bike because he thought they were cool...thought it would help his "image" by owning one....never took the MSF...GSX-R 1K....wasn't paying attention to the road...ended up going through the back cab of a truck because he tried to downshift instead of braking...RIP...but thats usually what happens when you aren't careful....now I'm not saying she will come to the same fate but it is a possibility...especially on that type of bike and no experience...sorry to hear that she won't listen to reason....

You think she really bought a busa or do you think shes just messin with ya? It would really suck if something does happen, as cyber said the busa is not a beginners bike.

She said she put money down on it and it was the last one left that they had in the shop. She's never talked about buying a bike to me really before but she seemed dead serious. So I would imagine she's on the level. I dont know her THAT well personally, just mainly a work friend who I chat w/ on breaks and such but I know her BF pretty well and havent had a chance to talk w/ him about it to see what he thinks about her getting such a beast bike.

First let me say that I know im gonna get hell for this, especially around here. And I am just stating MY view/opinion. And I mean no offense at all!

OK, Why do you feel you must tell her what bike she should or shouldnt get?? Maybe she cant ride a bicycle with training-wheels, maybe she can ride the bike to the limit. But I DO NOT believe you have the right to force your "ultimate" wisdom upon her because shes buying the bike SHE wants. Its her life period. If you see someone lighting a cigarete, do you stop them to tell them it could hurt them one day??? No I bet you dont. Cause it none of your business. SO why is this any different??? I guess im different and I would not say nothing like that to her, cause I wouldnt want you telling me what I should or shouldnt get.

Perfect example: My younger brother, hasnt rode a bike but a total of maybe 20miles, calls me this may and says " hey bro i bought a bike today. Keep in mind hes 23 ( a grown man that can make his own decisions without my help). I said cool what ya get?? Um a 2002 kawi zx12r. My first thoughts were damn thats big. BUT he can choose for himself. And all I said was " please be carefull, and remember that your right hand decides it all."
He has rode all summer on that bike and rides really good now......

All im saying is that people are grown and make there own life changing (good or bad) decisions on ther own. And I personally dont think anyone should tell someone that they made a bad decision, who made you decision god. I do believe in helping the situation thats already there. Give her pointers, tips, from your experiences....

That said, Im sure ill hear it now. But thats just my view and thats exactly why me and Wildkat are two different people.

I can see your point and Im sure that there are others who feel as you do..nothing wrong w/ 2 differeing opinions on the subject, thats why its great to talk about stuff like this. I probably should have prefaced part of that intial post w/ the fact that I wasnt coming down on her in a mean way at all, but rather a concerned and interested point of view.

Ive known this girl for oh, about a year or so and as I said before I know her fairly well from a co worker friend standpoint and we joke around alot w/ the others at break and such so its not like Im coming at her as a complete stranger and telling her how to run her life or what bike to get. And when I said are you freekin nuts it was not in an angry way, but rather a surprised and concerned way. Everyone on this board has seen people riding bikes they are not capable of handling. A busa is not a starter bike, plain and simple. Im not saying she will not turn out to be a great rider and a responsible one, she may very well do so and I hope she does. But I try to simply as a friend and now a fellow rider offer her advice about the bike that maybe she didnt know, possibly point out some alternative rides and advice about riding as I stated in my other posts.

Im not a decision god as you stated and she doesnt have to listen to me, and she didnt take anything I said in a condescending way or a negative way at all. But I would feel guilty if I did not atleast offer some insight into the situation for her because we are friends. For me, I appreciate when my friends offer their insight and .02 into things that I am into and like to talk about and I take their advice as a sign of trying to be nice and help me out, not as a sign of condemnation. Im not gonna push the issue with her or be rude or condescending to her about it, nor will I probably bring it up to her when I see her again unless she brings it up first; although I think she probably will since she seemed pretty excited. If she wants to get the bike, its her life and her decision and if she wants my advice or help she knows where to find me, if not its not the end of the world

What she does w/ her life is her business and I am not trying to tell her how to live it or run it..but my own personal feeling is, if I didnt say something especially since I know her and consider her a cool acquaintence/friend I owe it to her to atleast offer my help. Whether she takes it or not is her business.

Wellllll... he was doing it out of concern for her. The same as I would tell someone going skydiving "Are you freakin NUTS? Never jump out of a perfectly good airplane."

But I'm with ya somewhat... The busa is far less "twitchy" that the supersports. But with the kind of power it's delivering to the ground (165hp give or take I think) it's real easy to make a mistake if you haven't ridden a sportbike before (or A bike for that matter). One quick twist of the wrist in the wrong gear and that back end is going to break loose and poof. That's all she wrote. BUT... Under about 5000rpm it's relatively tame. Unlike a 600 gix or something similar though it's power band isn't the same. On a gixxer sixxer you don't get a kick in the pants until about 7000rpm when you hit the power band. On the busa, it's like there's two power bands (in my short experience with it) and one of them starts real low in the rpms. It's almost like a twin in that respect.

She's certainly playing with fire. But if she's damn careful she won't get burnt.

(my uncle gave me some advice when I told him I was upgrading to a busa... He has a 12R and said... "You'll be able to ride it. But you'll never be able to handle it." Which I think is good advice. There's probably only a handful of people in the world that can "handle" a busa the way it's meant to be ridden.)

                      My current ride of choice

Well that cigarete isn't going to plow into and kill me or a loved one like a out of control Busa doing triple digits can...

Sure she has the right to buy anything she wants, your just stating the obvious, everyone's freedom to do so...but please don't push your views on us because you think anyone anywhere should have the right to get on a bike totally above their driving skill and kill themself...

Myself like everyone here give's advice not to push my/their opinion on others, but to show them the errors of my/our ways and maybe they can learn from these mistakes...We are not telling them to do anything.

I care about people, and have always felt a bond of sorts with other motorcyclist's...as we are all a part of a elite club in my opinion. I would hate to see her injure/kill herself, hell I hate to see a woman even cry.

I can only hope she will take some good advice from friends, and bring her skills up at least a little before getting on the rocket ship named Busa...by purchasing a good used learner bike, keep it for 6 months to a year, and then moving up (still not to a Busa in my opinion though).

If she does get the Busa anyway, she is going to wreck it...lets face it if we had all gotten 2006 Porsche 911 Turbos when we were 15 yrs old with a learners permit, we probably wouldn't be here either...when she does wreck it, I only hope she has on full leathers and just gets some bruises and scratchs...and totals the Busa...then in the 3 months it takes her to get the insurance money, reallity sets in and she gets something more on her level.

I respect your opinion, but all of us here know what a Busa is and can do...and there is no way in h_ll you can say with a straight face it's a great "beginners" bike . You would have to be crazy to think so, plain and simple.

                              Peace out...
