  • Bike storing

It s almost winter now and i have to store my bike in my garage. Please tell me if my steps of storing a bike is correct.

    -Add new oil
-Run bike once a week in garage (Im just going to let it run on neutral in the garage for 5 minutes so liquids will stir).
    -keep on a battery tender
    -Add fuel stabilizer
    -new fuel filter
-new spark plugs cuz its about tie to change then anyways.
My garage is still cold in the winter, will this hurt my bike??
    Thanks everyone!!

Don't run it once a week, I've been told that will just encourage carbon buildup in the engine.

Make sure it's a Battery tender that shuts off when it reaches 100% and not a trickle charger which charges constantly regardless of the batteries current level.

Personally I'd add the stabilizer while I'm gassing up the bike so it mixes with the gas. then run the bike for a few minutes so you know some get's to the carbs. You should then drain your carbs, It's been 3 winters now and I've never drained mine , I'm taking them apart this year so I'll see how bad they are.

Put the bike up on the center stand and then put some thing under the front end(I use car stands) to get the front tire off the ground.

If your changing the plugs wait t'il spring and do a vavle adjustment since your probably due for that too?

what woobie said. Battery tender Jr is a peak charger and will not over charge the battery.
get the tires off the ground to prevent them from drying out. If you use stabil or another fuel additive to keep the gas fresh you shouldn't have to drain the carbs. Run the bike through a half tank with stabil and then fill back up with gas and stabil. change your oil before you store it and then change it again in the spring. You know during the winter months the engine can get condensation in it thus water in oil, the reason for changing it in the spring and fresh to start with means that you won't have any thing in the oil before storing

thom, before storing it, can you use any oil? like what you use on cages. since its on storage and switch back to a MC specific oil in the spring? that would cut the cost maybe a tad ($25 for 4 quarts of oil vs. $8 for Penzoil)

Duh, of course it has, it's that time of year again

I didn't drain my carbs last year (actually drain the float bowls) I just unhook the tank, then run it dry. Started right up in the spring and ran strong all summer.

The Outboard motor at the cottage has been stored that way for the past 15-16 years, and every summer it starts on the first or second pull.

seqx34, I wouldn't but if cost means that much then I guess, if you don't run it that way.

Well, since your clutch will still be sitting in the oil, you don't want to use any oils that aren't wet-clutch compatible. My advice is to seek out the cheapest motorcycle-specific oil you can find (in my area that means Valvoline Motorcycle 10w40 at Super Walmart -- something like $2.48 a liter).

                  Cheers

Yeah , but if the bike won't be running , not much oil will be getting TO the clutch , will it ? I always read that you use the cheapest oil you can find while it's sitting just to have something in it , then drain it and refill with the "good stuff" come spring .

thanks guys i'll just use Mobil MX4T only reason i asked if it would be ok is coz my Dad got about 3 cases each of Valvoline and Mobil 1 Oils (dont ask why? he usually goes into this "Bulk Buying" madness once in awhile) Funny thing is....................... he gets a FREE Oil Change for 2 Years from the Car Dealer and hes only had his Pacifica for 5 months.

In that case, just don't bother to dump it come spring -- ride on it
Unless you find fuel in it, or it's turned chocolate-milk colored (too much water content absorbed)...
