  • Integrated turn signal mirrors (93 Kat 600)

Hey friends, sorry if this is a frequently asked question-- I was not able to find it using the search function.
I recently had an incident where my right mirror ended up smashed, and I need to replace it. I was thinking while I had to do that anyway, what about those fancy turn signal mirrors those cool kids have?

Well I found an ebay listing for aftermarket mirrors that fit my bike (93 Katana 600) http://www.ebay.com/itm/BLACK-MOTORC...BYsPIb&vxp=mtr

But for the life of me I can't figure out how to connect them, I'm having some trouble finding a guide or something to connect them to the turn signals. I'm very new to modding (Had a kat for a few months and done simple stuff, oil etc), and am also looking to plastidip my fairings (is that something people do?? I hear mixed reviews), but the turn signal mirror thing is more of a priority for me. Any help would be appreciated!

    Welcome.

Pull down the manual (via Mechanics 101 section) and look up your bike's wiring diagram.

Generically speaking, you're just going to hook up the same wires you have going to your front signals now. Just like a car, there are usually only 2 or 3 wires. One is ground. One is running lights (if equipped) and the other is the flasher bulb itself.

Locate the wires on your current lights and see how many you have. It isn't too hard to figure out. Electrical stuff is just like plumbing. Volts = pressure, Amps = volume, Resistance = a valve. Pretty much anyway...

Do yourself a favor. When it comes time to actually hook up the wires, do it right. Strip the ends, basket weave/twist them together, solder them and shrink wrap. Avoid the temptation to use ScotchLoks because they are corrosive aluminum and generally suck. It's a pay it forward thing.

Crimp connectors and shrink tubing will work also, if a soldering iron isn't available.

thanks guys! I appreciate the advice-- one more quick thing. I'm having issues getting the current mirrors off due to... this incredibly stripped hex screw.

I've tried using a screw remover drillbit to no avail, and multiple hex keys. Anyone have a surefire way to get out a stripped screw?

Can you sneak a dremel cutoff wheel or hacksaw in there? (carefully...) and just cut it off enough to get the head/mirror off. Don't use a Sawzall...

You could also try spraying the threads with WD40 etc to lube them and crank the living hell out of a pair of vice grips on the exposed threads and extract it that way. You could also try double nutting the exposed threads so you don't mangle them depending on how much room you have.

Yeah been there, drilled the head off so, I wouldn't damage the fairing. Then I had more room to do what ever I needed to. Expect to have to retap the nut.

I ended up drilling it off, thanks for the help! I'm learning things, slowly...
