  • Solenoid clicks, nothing else

I've always had a very slow start on this bike over the life of several batteries. I recently replaced the battery after 3 or so years on it because it wasn't starting and I had to plug it in or boost it (from a turned off car) every few starts. I was getting a really slow almost turning the motor over but not catching, now just the solenoid clicks once and nothing. Even with a brand new battery or when it's attached to a car battery...

    Ideas?

Easy way to test the starter?

Wire an amp gauge to it. But, they are relitively cheap and yours is relitively old...

Is the solenoid part of the starter, or is it separate? If separate, it could be the solenoid itself. The contacts will eventually get worn and dirty enough that higher resistance reduces the amount of power going to the starter.

If the solenoid is separate, you could use something to short the battery cable straight to the solenoid cable and see if the starter turns. If it turns like it should, it's the solenoid. If it acts the same, it's the starter.

Just make sure the bike is in neutral, and maybe have it on the center stand just in case the wet clutch still makes it surge a tiny amount at startup.

I mean, based on my experience even if the starter turns with 12v on it, it's hard to say for sure whether it's working well enough to turn the motor over. I'd probably either replace the brushes, or just replace the starter and be done with it.
