Carb removal: remove the seat (key required to unlock it), remove the tank (sounds like you've already got that figured out) remove the airbox - held in at the rear by a bracket, just unbolt the whole bracket from the frame. Unscrew the hose clamps that connect the carbs to the airbox. There's 4, one for each carb. Unscrew the hose clamps that connect the carbs to the head. Again there's 4. Disconnect the choke cable - pull the rail towards you to get some slack. Do this in a well lit area so you can see how it unhooks. Not easy to describe, but really easy to get when you see it. Disconnect the throttle cables from the carbs - note which one connects where, it matters. One opens the throttle, the other closes it. Yes, it's spring operated, so I'm assuming it's there as a backup, but either way it's there and the bike wont run with them switched. Reconnecting the throttle cables is kind of a bitch BTW, just be patient and it happens eventually. If you have a CA emissions equipped bike, there's a couple tubes coming out the bottom, disconnect them. Carbs should now be free. Go read carbs 102 in the wiki (@ upper left) and clean/rebuild them.

Don't clean the carbs and try to run the bike until you either clean the tank or get a new one. The rust in the tank will clog up the carbs faster than you can say "oops". POR-15 will clean out rust and seal the tank so it can't re rust. I'd also recommend rebuilding the petcock (not very hard) because odds are its gummed up too.

As far as figuring out those 2 hoses you mentioned....there's lots of hoses. A pic is worth 1000 words. With that many peeps here will be able to ID them and let you know but without...

For posting a pic, upload it to something like photobucket, and copy/paste the link they provide.

Good luck, welcome aboard. Your kat might be in rough shape, but if you can get it up and running, they're great bikes.

BTW, eBay is a great place for (used) parts. So are bikebandit.com and ronayers.com (for new parts/rebuild kits etc)

I would just find a new tank, most still have the sender in them. Then clean and seal it. If it rusted the sender to pieces its pretty bad. Use the IMG option to post pics

First, Ebay is your friend for parts of all kinds.

Second, don't start your time with the bike by taking short cuts, it's not worth it if you want to spend more time riding than wrenching (coming from one who does all his own wrenching).

While the internet is full of ideas to try when de-rusting a tank the question is how many times do you want to do the same project, as well as those that need to be done over because the first step wasn't done right? POR-15 may seem expensive, it may seem like it takes forever to complete, but if you do it right the first time you'll probably never have to think about your tank again. Same with cleaning your carbs properly, do it right the first time and scratch that project off your list for a good long time.

Most of the advice you'll get on here comes from people with a ton of experience with bikes in general and Katana's very specifically. When someone recommends a way to do something it generally comes from that experience, either their own or through the trials and tribulations of other who have gone before.

Take some time and read through the archives and have a look at the Wiki, it can only help you to understand your bike better.
