  • Not new, but first post...

Hi everybody! Like the title says, I'm not new here, but this is my first post. Also, I'm not a new rider but this is my first "sporty" bike.
First bike was a 1982 Suzuki GS450L upon which I learned to ride shortly after high school.
After about a year and a half I got super lucky and won a 1997 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic. (slightly bigger bike ) Rode that for the next 3 years or so, but cash flow problems "made" me sell it. (kids)
Fast forward to early summer this year - friend of a friend had bought a new bike and was willing to part with the old for a very agreeable price.

    And now it's mine.

It's a well used 1991 Katana 600, Stock except for a 4 into 1 with a Vance & Hines slip-on and K&N pod filter (which needs to go, from what I've read) and almost new tires. 25k on the odo, reads ~28k now. Didn't do much other than an oil change and new battery since I didn't want to lose any riding time. No mirrors or working turn signals. I had the signals working, but they stopped so I just used my hands. The carbs were dirty so a quick clean to get it ride-able but it's not perfect. (idle/low RPM issues)
Joined here to glean information about my new toy and have been soaking it up ever since.
Now that the season has ended the repairs can begin. Brakes, chain/sprockets, full carb rebuild & sync, lighting upgrades, missing parts, bodywork/paint, etc.

This is the day I bought it.

I added lights during a couple rainy days a couple weeks later. The LED's are parts from other vehicles, a combination of the red arrows from Suburban/Tahoe mirrors, side marker lights from early 2000's BMW's and tractor trailer tail-lights.

Sweet, enjoy the ride...race tech front springs for your weight and emulators up front and either a rebuilt 750 shock sprung for your weight or an R6 shock sprung for your weight will make a dramatic difference in the way the bike handles. If your a hefty dude you may want a Bandit 1200 shock resprung, it will raise the rear by 1 1/2" the R6 will drop the rear 3/4".

Thank you all, I'm glad to be here. Lots of great information!
It does look better in the pics than in person, little scrapes, cracks and a hint of rust here and there... All planned to be repaired during the colder months.

You can respring a Kat 750 shock for your weight and keep the current ride height.

                  Welcome to KR

I went down the R6 shock path my self. Its a cheap upgrade if you buy a low mileage one used off ebay. It does lower the rear 3/4" so you have to lower the forks to get the correct geometry back or buy a let of lowering links at +2 -2 and you could raise the rear back up.

Ive got lots of information on my build in my signature.
