  • Blakk Kat from Kiwiland!

Hey guys, long time lurker first time poster. I got an old 89 1100f just over a year ago as part of a package deal with some other bikes and ive just recently decided to do something with it. Bike is in fairly rough condition as you expect for a machine in NZ, but its a starting point!

She compression tests at 180psi (+/-3psi) across all four cylinders - not bad for the 100,000km on the clock! I have no doubt the real kms are higher too as the speedo doesn't work... Ive had the forks shop rebuilt and new tyres fitted, put new chain and sprockets on, and had a test ride or three. Bike has issues with cyls 3 and 4 downpipes being cold at idle and rugged running at high rpm with what appears to be a lot of unburnt fuel vapor exiting the right pipe at open road speed. However even with all this going on the old girl still stays ten feet ahead of my modified 89 'semi-rat' ZXR400 H1 from every lights so I'm keen to persevere with her - she's got spirit!

She's currently in the shed and I've got some time off work due to injury so its time to hit it. Carbs have been stripped and cleaned, New Iridium plugs have been fitted. Now it wont start at all . I'm searching this amazing forum and have some idea where to go from here. First I'm going to clean and test the entire wiring harness as Ive already noticed the main power supply coming off the battery overheating under starting load until I squeezed up the crimp joint a tad more. Its old and cracked in places so may even replace it completely as there doesn't appear to be too much in the way of a loom. Surely a custom loom wouldn't cost too much? Hmm...

After I know the wiring is sound Ill add in the coil relay mod and headlight relay mod. At the moment I'm getting spark at all four just no fire, but I'm only seeing 11v at the power supply to the coils and it drops to 7v when cranking and from what Ive read here that's just not enough? I'm about to shoot into town to get a few supplies then I'm going to pat my Kat all day .

Fantastic forum, a veritable goldmine of information and ideas! Glad to be a part of it all.

      Welcome to KR!

Definitely not enough power to the coils. Needs to be 11v when you're cranking. Coil relay isn't too hard to do, there's a good write up on it.

      Any pics??
