  • Hello. And what should I do?

    Hello everyone,

thought I would introduce myself and ask a question at the same time.

I'm from Los Angeles, been inhaling smog since I was born. I study engineering and know my way around a car really well but I have only done simple work on motorcycles.

Now the question. I stopped riding my 2000' bandit 600 because of carb issues. Then unexpectedly someone gave me a crashed 2006 Katana 750 for free that runs but the forks and frame are bent. My question is would I have problems putting the Katana engine in the bandit frame and if so could someone throw out some ideas of things I would have to buy or modify to make it work?

I would like to put this in a different thread once I start the swap. However, first I wanted to see if anyone had advice on what I should or should not do.

Any advice small or great is appreciated.

    Thanks!

    The simple answers...

    Yes, easy swap.

No, not much you would have to do or buy to make that happen. Between both bikes you should have most all the parts necessary to make it so.

Welcome, Kats and bandit engines swap pretty easily.

If your going to follow through, then I'll give more than just the simple answers...

The engine and mountings are going to be almost essentially the same. The physical aspect of putting the 750 in I would expect to be simple as if you were swapping the same engine in it out.

The things that may be different and you need to address.... (please note I do not have a bandit, nor ever worked on one so some minor things may be over looked here...)

Wiring connections to the alternator. The 600 alternator very well may just swap right in, just check the tooth count on the gear to make sure they are the same. That resolves the connection issues if they are different.

Sprocket cover. The Kat cover is going to be different. Your 600 cover should bolt right up to resolve any issue there. Make sure you do a full clutch adjustment when you do.

Oil cooler. You may want to look at upgrading your oil cooler to a larger size due to the larger engine. The Katana have a 9 row for the 600s and a 15 row for the 750s, for examples. Pretty sure the bandit/katana oil mountings are different so that would probably not be a direct swap there. It isn't necessarily an issue where you can't run the smaller cooler, just be aware you might be more prone to hotter running if your putting it in more punishing conditions.

          External fitments around engine...

This is where you will find the most common spots you will need to stop and work out. While the engine mounting is the same, the carb/airbox may not be. You definitely will want to use an airbox or your going to add running issues to the equation. I'm positive you will need to use the bandit box to fit the frame, but not sure the boots on the box will fit/match up to the katana carbs. So that is one of the first things I would start looking at.... matching the bandit airbox to the katana carbs. If those match up, everything else should be simple. If not, resolving that issue would be the biggest challenge I can think of.

I'm sure there are some things I'm not thinking of right now, but you have both bikes... time to just start comparing differences in the details between them.

Putting the Katana motor into the bandit frame will be just slightly more difficult than doing it the other way around (and less documentation on KR). Also you'll need to run pod filters because of the differences in airbox.

You may also notice some issues with exhaust clearance, and wiring on the alternator plug, and a few other things.

It's not hard, and fairly straight forward. Expect to spend a few bucks on parts.

Although, if it's carb issues on the bandit... I'd probably just fix those it's easier and faster than doing the swap would be

Well, if I read it right... isn't the Kat motor a 750, vs the bandit a 600.

That alone is enough reason for the swap for me....

But that said... it's very possible that the final resolution for the airbox/carb mounting/fitment issues may be to clean the bandit carbs and use them on the 750 motor. While not ideal, it's workable and still would be a lot more power than the 600cc engine.
