  • No Crank, no neutral lamp...

Hi I'm Papo new in this place like to say hi to all Kat riders. I have a 04 kat 600 just bought 1st bike. Bike is nice with 18k + on it. Purchased bike with out riding it due to a no start, no crank issue. It did click when start button depressed. As an auto technician I diagnosed it as a starter due to clicking noise at starter relay and engine did move ( turn ) when trying to push start bike. Got bike home removed starter opened starter inside found soldered joint to be loose. Cleaned armature, brushes, magnets and case. Reassembled and soldered 12v contacts. Tested starter works awesome. Reassembled bike engine turned over hard start. After reading on this found that carburators are a problem on this. Lots of backfiring due to lack of fuel. Poured sea foam in fuel tank ran bike for a bit it started clearing out with less backfiring and some what good throttle response. Then all of the sudden bike stalled tried starting no start, no crank and no neutral lamp on. Has anyone seen this happen lose of nuetral for no reason when bike was still and idling? Need help. Thank you.

Check your fuses and the neutral at the battery plug connection.

The secondary ground (small ground wire off the battery) should be checked also. Make sure the ground point is clean, and the connector by the battery is working as intended. This circuit is fused as well, so check that.

Ok guys here is some info on what I diagnosed problem to be. Got to go to storage today Saturday and bike started neutral lamp on all is well except when engine reaches temp it stalls and same issue no crank and no neutral lamp. Did wiggle test on harness neutral lamp flickered and side stand relay clicks, which led me to a component in the engine sprocket cover. Did some research and the component name is the " side stand diode " a three wire component. Did some research for this component besides calling dealer to no findings. Has anyone replaced this part before or have a repair manual that would have the part number? Thank you.

Sounds like a bad electrical connection that is heating up.

The diode isn't in the cover area as far as I'm aware.

The neutral switch puck is... but if your wiggling the wire and that "fixes" it... it's more likely that you can simply repair it because it's not the puck, but the wire coming out has been cut/crimped. You can splice it back and repair easy enough, or clean the connection. IF... big if though, IF... it is the puck, don't buy the OEM replacement. If your going to buy a replacement neutral puck, there is another model that has the 6 gear selection option in it... If you ever wanted a gear position indicator, that's the one you want to buy and it's pretty close to the same price.

bikebandit.com has parts fiche for you to look up the parts you want to replace and buy.

The diode ... Is in the side stand relay.... I think.... If I remember right. The neutral switch you want is for a GS bike.

Update: problem fixed, diagram says its a side stand diode, in reality it's the neutral safety switch ( gear selector switch ). Solder joint in the blue wire came loose when bike got to temp, the silicone on switch which cover the wires (3) of them got soft causing wire to lose contact. Scrapped off silicone resoldered contact re sealed with rtv silicone put bike together and all is well. After the fix is when I found out what the name of the switch is actually called and not what diagram calls it. Lesson well learned. Might have to leave auto repair and get into bike repair. Thanks to all who gave some input! Go Katriders.
