  • I'm a noob.

Hi. I'm Skylar and I recently reserved a 1993 Katana 600 with a clear title, with 8k miles on it, and with tax+title it will only cost me $573. The dealer I am getting it from took it in on a trade after the owner lost the key and had it sitting for 2 years. So as of right now I don't know if it even runs, but I thought for $573 I couldnt go wrong. I plan to get a key made after I take ownership of it and next spring take it to a Suzuki dealership to get it looked at. I am a new rider. I took the MSF course and this is my first bike.

I understand I need to get mirrors and a turn signals before it is street legal. I plan to just get barend mirrors and OEM turn signals. I plan to eventually replace the front right fairing and replace the barend mirrors with OEM ones. There is some residue were the original owner took the stickers off and I plan to clean that off and get rid of the Spy+ one. I'm assuming that the bike originally looked like
because of the sticker residue placement on it and I plan to have it look close to
after putting a little work and $$$$ into it.

Here's pics from the dealers website:

OEM graphics are hard to find. Do it any way you choose. Bug and tar remover will remove the old residue.

If you aren't planning on riding till spring save yourself a ton of headaches and $$$$ and spend the winder doing some of the basics yourself.

Check condition of petcock. Rebuild or replace if needed.

May as well just go ahead and do the full Carbs 101 thing and get 4 rebuild kits while you're at it. After sitting so long the carbs will need a cleaning.

Check the chain and sprocket condition, replace if needed.

Check the date code on the tires, replace in needed.

Flush the brake system front & rear and check the pad condition. Replace as needed.

Then, come spring, you'll have a nice bike for riding.

I know I already started looking. When I said I was going to try and have it match that one I meant by putting a silver Katana decal on the lower part of the body and matching the paint scheme of red and black.

Well the problem with that is the bike will be stored in my moms garage over the winter thats 30 min away and I'm working two jobs and going to school so I don't know how much time I can devote to working on it until summer when schools out. Thanks for the advise though I will start looking into all of that once I get the bike home hopefully I can get it slowly knocked out piece by piece over the winter. I will still take it to a dealer though just for a peace of mind before I began to ride it.

              Welcome.
Dealers don't have a good reputation around here. Besides overcharging for dubious quality work, when it comes to anything over 10 years old they usually don't want anything to do with it at all.

From what you've said about your living situation, I'd suggest seeing if you've got a friend around who lives off campus and would be willing to let you work on parts in their garage, shed or basement. You could pull the carbs and the broken fairing off the bike, take them back to school with you and work on them as you get time.

Yeah I don't have a friend with a garage near by, but I plan to do the things Skjeflo suggested and pull off the parts I can work on at my apartment. I don't plan to work on the broken fairing until I learn to ride it just incase I end up dropping it. I found some pretty good write ups on here how to do things Skjeflo taled about though.

That's actually not a bad idea at all. Odds are decent that you'll drop the bike while learning. Hopefully it's only in a parking lot because you forgot to put the sidestand down or something else similarly harmless (to you)

Or... pull off the fairings, and ride it with out them while you fix it.

Then when you drop it, you don't scratch them anyways and it gets fixed quicker.

                          Well heres a little update.....

A couple of weeks ago i rented a trailer, I payed off what I owed on the bike, and delivered it with the help of my mom to her house. I recently contacted someone that does automotive keys near by and got quoted $125 for the making of my key if I bring the bike to him and $195 if he has to come to me. I looked at how much it would cost to by all the parts and its around $700 which is new tires, mirrors, turn signals, carb parts, chain and sprocket, and petcock. This weekend I plan on taking the fairings off and getting my first look at the motor. Heres hoping there is no unexpected things to come.
