  • i'm buying a 2002 katana.

Hi all. I have been riding for a pretty long time.
A guy that I work with has a 2002 katana 600 that he offered
Me for $800. I'm here looking for info and whatnot.
I have seen some of the streetfighters and really like them.

He dropped it at about 10 mph, so it has some scuffs. New tires and battery.
He also had the seat recovered and removed all of the stickers.

And yes, I ride a Triumph.

If it's a currently functioning and safe to ride bike, then $800 for the bike is a really good deal.

Plastics can still be easily replaced /fixed /repaired for that model to go back full stock if you wanted.

Honestly, a fightered version of a kat with out a lot of modifications and work is ugly as shit.

      Welcome to KR!
The Kat frames don't lend themselves well to fighters, but hey it's your bike, if you dig the look that's all that matters.

$800 for that is a nice steal btw.

Yup $800 sounds like a solid deal

          $600!

So this guy has a new belly pan for it. Agreed on $600.
He want a week to try to get it "running right". Says the battery is 1 year old, but doesn't want to start. Has a scorpion exhaust and stage 1 jet kit. For the price I'm getting it at I'll be happy to buy a new battery.

Btw, I REALLY like this forum! Tons of info and some really good builds!

I've read this a lot, and I can't figure out the aversion to the Katana frame.

The oil cooler isn't a work of art, but I don't find the rest of the frame to be as hideous as some of you seem to.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but can someone post up a picture and highlight the portions of the katana frame that they feel are THAT ugly? It's not like there's a big white coolant reservoir hanging off the side of the bike... That's what I usually dislike about "streetfighters."

The main thing I notice is more routing of wires and oil lines. There are areas on the frame that have unused bolt holes. The tank looks off with fairings off also. I would love to see someone address those areas and come up with something nice but the cost to do so is prohibitive. IMO if someone could do some fiberglass work or some plastic work to address the tank to frame, clean up wiring and pretty up the oil cooler and oil lines they could have something more o e of a kind and nice.

The gap between tank and frame looks horrible. The actual frame is done in a way that no welds are cleaned up, the shape of the frame is not pleasant to look at, and does not give any kind of flowing lines for the bike at all. It's meant to be covered.

The parts of the actual engine that would look good being seen, are covered or blocked by the frame being so low. The extra stuff that you don't want to see, is openly exposed like the battery box, wiring components, and so on.

The sub frame is even more apparent when uncovered, with the thick support rail too far down giving it a horrible look.

Well done fighters generally address all of those issues. That's a major over haul and a lot of work, so very often... most fighters do not pull it off.

Most "fighters" that look good, use an aluminum based frame or a trellis type frame as a base. The aluminum based frames mostly have the gas tanks sitting down flush with them, not leaving ugly and out of place gaps there.

You are right, looks is a matter of opinion.

To be honest I had seen some stripped down that looked really nice, but when I got to see the bike it was in a lot better shape than was originally described. I'll leave the fairings on.

Well, I picked up the Kat yesterday evening. I got a new battery and charged it. This morning before the rain really came down here in Missouri I got about a 10 minute ride. From what I could tell it is fairly comfortable. And the steering seemed very heavy and slow. It has new dunlops in the correct sizes. Is this just a normal low speed thing with these bikes kreylyn?

Kats are heavy bikes, so it's somewhat normal. And yes, they're super comfy, I didn't know that when I got my 1st and man was I happy about it.
By "new" do you mean recently manufactured tires? (Date code is stamped on them) or very little wear? It's not unheard of to have tires that are several years old but still have a lot of tread left. Old tires don't handle as well so even though they look ok they often aren't. The rubber hardens with age and especially with UV exposure.
Also, I believe dunlops are the stock tire - when I swapped tires to Michelin pilot road tires, huge improvement. So they work but aren't the best. Different tires might make the bike feel lighter, but so will experience as you get to know it better.

Afterthought: are the tires properly inflated? I notice a heavy feeling when mine are ~4+ psi low.

Stock setup, yeah, it's normal. In part due to a more relaxed position, in part due to cheaper and or worn out suspension.

Some mild adjustments... you can counter that and make it much more responsive.

A proper adjustment to the suspension (shock rebuild, springs in the front) and a slight adjustment on the ride height (taller rear, lower front, just a little bit) will really dial the bike in and make the handling significantly better.

Low tire pressure will also have a major effect on that feeling?

The tire pressure is good. The tires are Dunlop sportmax. They are about 1 yr old. The bike was sitting in a garage for about the whole length of time they have been on. They aren't flat spotted. I'm going to play around with the suspension setting next day off. And change the oil. Thanks guys!
