  • Another new guy... with an 88 KAT

What a relief to be able to go to a place where there is actual help. I have been following the KatRiders for about a week now and and very impressed with all of you!
    Now to the fun stuff...
I picked up a 88 Katana 600F the other day. I am letting my 13 year old boy rebuild/restore this beast! Ya know the father son project. I am sooo proud of him! He pulled his first CARB!! I almost cried... any way I need to find the upper and lower rebuild kit for the carbs... any thoughts on where to go? I have looked all over and I cant find the upper... Please help I will post pics, once I figure out how too...

Welcome to KR. I'm not the best to answer mechanical stuff, but I'm sure someone who is will chime in shortly. Nice to see a project with your son, would of loved for my dad to of done that with me.

Awesome project! Have you found carbs 101 yet? It's in the wiki if you haven't. So are downloadable service manuals. Not sure what you mean by top end rebuild kit. New needles/diaphragms? Diaphragms generally don't need replacing unless they're torn/have a hole somewhere. If you want needles, I'd recommend a factory pro jet kit. Better needles than stock and adjustable. Often ranks as a top mod in here (along with upgrading suspension). If you mean something else can you be more specific?
K&L makes rebuild kits, available on amazon and eBay.

All I needed to rebuild my carbs were the K&L rebuild kits. I found a set of 4 on eBay for ~$50. That was the best at the time. Once you open them up and take a look at the parts you'll know what they need.

            shpielers--
Thanks and yes I even laminated the Carbs 101 and is sitting on the work bench =-)
So top end-- I was talking about the diaphragms, they are in good shape so thanks-- one less thing to replace SCORE! I will get the pro jet kit. The issue I am having is the 1988 status of the carb.. I think it is a BST32 how would I find out exactly? I have rebuilt car engines in the past but NEVER a bike-- I am a New Rookie to say the least...

            MEngineer--
Thanks I will be on there tonight!

Welcome. And great project for you and your son. I plan on doing the same with mine when he gets old enough. I still have quite a few years to go though. Good luck with everything on it. You've come to a great place for info and help, plus the people here aren't too bad either. lol

'88 is kind if the bastard child of Kats. For some reason I thought you had said yours is an '89. Never personally dealt with them, but I have seen recommendations to switch from your 88s to set from an 89-87. Not entirely sure why though. Someone more knowledgable will add their .02 to that soon enough

so your saying that I should just get a different carb? If so what carb is compatible with the 88' GSX600F engine? I am open to all suggestions =-) and thank you ALL!!

                    Clarifications...

88-89 600s used the BST32s. There used to be rebuild kits, but they are pretty much not supported any longer and I have not found anyone with parts recently still in stock (as a full rebuild kit). Buying the parts individually can still be done, and using replacement non OEM parts for orings and such can save a lot of cash. It's a challenge, but doable... just no simple kits any longer.

Additionally, the posts that hold the float pins (what the float pivots on) has a tendency to get broken because the pins/post oxidize to each other and can be very difficult to get the pins out. If you get them out, should be fine from that point. First thing I would do though is see about that.

90-97 600s use BST33s. Generally speaking they are a little better in design, have rebuild kits avail, and lots of parts generally can be found. They use a cable choke system (the 88 does not have) and you would need air box, engine boots, choke cable, new left throttle pod (with the choke lever setup). That's what comes to mind off hand.

If you can totally disassemble the 32s with no damage to the bodies, then I would rebuild them and go on. If your looking at replacing the 32s... I would go with the 33s instead.
