  • Rubber padding on Swing arm

Dumb question.. What the heck is that rubber part on the front of the swing arm? Is it supposed to protect the swing arm from the chain?

I ask because even if I have the chain properly adjusted, the chain ends up hitting the darn thing.. with more slack, it won't hit.

    Very frustrating..

If your talking about the rubber piece shown on the swingarm in this pic upper left corner...

Then yes... that is exactly what it's for. To prevent metal chain from rubbing on metal swingarm and causing wear. The rubber guard will resist wear greatly and it takes a really long time to wear them out unless something extreme has occurred... such as a major change in suspension/bike height, or excessively running an extremely loose chain.

Normal expectation is you adjust the chain per the manual specs, but even then you will still see some chain contact on the rubber through normal use. It will generally just slide over it but cause very little if any wear.

Yup that's gotta be it.. I have almost 19k on the bike. about 3-4k of which I've done. I think the previous owners stunted the bike at some point in time.. part of that piece is pushing up some so the chain is hitting it under load. So I think i'll be looking for a replacement.

        Thanks!

Replacing it means pulling the entire swingarm out. If you go that far....

Wash, clean, grease the pivot spacers and bearings in the swingarm with marine grease (or water repellant grease).

You might want to touch up an rust spots with some spray paint, while you have it off. That will go a long ways. The swingarm are really prone to hold damp dirt on the top of them and cause a lot of rust to form there.

If you have any other rear suspension plans, like swapping the shock... this would be a good thing to plan to do at the same time.

            Krey,

Would you suggest not worrying about it? Very annoying riding along and feeling thudding at slower speeds.

Biggest fear is that chain may break because of all the thudding.

I do appreciate the heads up on doing said replacement.

I'd definitely replace it. It's not worth the chance. Mine slides right over it and causes no issues.

I mean, look at it logically.. It's you DRIVE CHAIN. If that gets cocked up while you're out and about you have very few options.

It might be a good idea to post up a picture of your chain runner as normally the chain side plates will wear into it until the chain rollers touch & from there on in there should be minimal wear

In normal use the chain runner should not cause a "thudding" so i suspect there is more to this noise than has been said here

My default answer on anything when something is broken... is fix it.

How urgent that is depends on what is broken.

I agree... pics of the actual issue could help us come up with a temp resolution for example until your at a comfortable point of changing it out if necessary.
