  • Greetings from Missouri's 600 Katana

    Hello Gentlemen,

Just wanted to drop in real quick and say hello; then back to work on the Katana. Recently picked myself up a 1993 Suzuki Katana 600 in pretty bad shape but I've managed to get her running smooth again.

Previous owner had it sitting in the weather with no cover on, un-winterized. Owner before that (of whom I had the pleasure to meet) may have been the same case. First thing I did was a proper oil change, oil came out BLACK and in a scary sludge; the oil filter itself was Suzuki OEM, only being able to find that out after using various cleaners on it's exterior to wipe away god-knows how long of environment. Chain was too dirty and loose to speak of, took me over 30 rags and 2 cans of chain cleaner to properly get back to shining condition - Chain seems to be in good condition though after a nice adjustment. Wouldn't hold an idle, found out the sparks were darker than the black fairings the bike sports.

Picked up the bike for $1200, so far have put about $100 into it, and spent the last week-and-a-half but she runs and shifts smooth as a bell. Right after buying it I experienced an extreme buyer's remorse; Now that the Katana is running strong I've made both it and myself happy.

Welcome! Don't be discouraged down the road when you find little issues like needing new plug wires, carb boot o-rings etc as those are common things that can cause multiple symptoms...as well as dirty carbs. Oh and stay far away from k&n air filters or any filters not like oem paper, our CV carbs don't work well without the back pressure.

So I've heard; I've done tons of research on the motorcycle before and after buying, and always check and triple-check everything before I go and do it. Thanks for the heads up! Should I bother cleaning the paper air filter, or just grab a new OEM one - also, should I clean it every X miles? Wasn't able to find anything on this, and thanks in advance for the advice.

Nah, it's not even close to a hate. This Katana has become my passion.

Paper filter should be replaced not cleaned. You could blow them out while waiting for a new filter.

Looks good, thanks for the information. I'll tack that onto my already low-budget-but-highly-successful tune-up.
