Hey Katriders,
Like the title says, I'm pretty sure my mechanic (likely former mechanic now) put 117.5 main jets on my 2001 Kat 750 two weeks ago. I got the bike last month, got a 2 bros slip on for it. It was running like crap (wouldn't idle, surging, etc) when I bought it and I read on yelp this mechanic is "an artist" with carbs so I took my slip on and bike over to him. When I dropped it off I metnioned that these forums recommended a 114 main jet with a slip on but when I picked it up he said "uuuh I put a 120... no wait... a 117.5 on there. It was one size bigger than what it had already..."
/sigh
So she seems to be running really rich now. Its not terrible, and she really pulls when wide open but has poor throttle response at low RPM and idles rough when cold. I'm also worried about damaging the engine with unburned fuel washing away the oil now.
Last night my buddy and I wer talking about it and he had an idea, lets see what happens with lots of air ... We pulled the air box out completely and started her up to see how she ran. Surpisingly to me (not to him as it was his idea), low RPM throttle response was way way way better. Up high she seemed starved for fuel (based on my limited experience with VM Beetle and my Honda Nighthawk) but I assume that would be assuaged with some sort of air filer on there providing some resistence.
Long story short, do you guys think it's worth trying a K&N air filte ron my bike? It seems a lot easier than re-jetting again.
Thanks in advance!
