  • clutch cable snapped spring in sproket help

    my clutch cable snapped
i already have a new cable but just realised the spring looks in the cover looks strange
ok i will explain what happened just got to work and the clutch cable snapped so i called the AA ''i dont have a drink problem''
when the engineer from the AA arrived he decided he wanted to take the fairing off..
so i expained and helped remove the fairing he made a temp clutch cable it snapped but luckly i got home.
today i decided to change the cable but i realised the cable is all
    in place nothing broken
then realised the spring after taking the cover off
is the spring the problem i didnt see it in the dark when the engineer was fixing up the cable
i am trying to find a oem number for the spring without any luck
    any advice thanks

The spring does nothing for making the clutch work when you pull it. If pulling the lever isn't releasing the clutch, it's not the spring for sure.

The spring's only job is to take any residual pressure off the push rod when the cluch is fully released. It helps it to be more crips in the release, but only a very little amount. The primary pressure to engage and release the clutch is the clutch springs under the right side cover with the clutch basket. If that spring was not there at all, 99.9% of the time people would not notice it at all.

That said... I would strongly recomend you do the following...

Remove the clutch cable from the bike entirely. Inspect it that way. You should easily be able to slide the cable through it's casing by gripping just the tip of one end. If it wants to bind or bend instead of sliding in and out, it's a problem. You can try cleaning and lubing it, but if it never gets so that you can very easily slide it in and out, replace it.

Remove the sprocket cover from the bike. Wash it. Remove all dirt. Do the same for the area under the cover on the engine. Find a clean bench and put down a shop rag or large towel to work on. Take the 2 10mm bolts out holding the clutch actuator in. Clean it. Look for any small ball bearings that might be running loose. Collect them and keep them safe. Take the actuator apart by twisting it out of the worm gear. Again, be looking for any small ball bearings. Clean well, remove all grease. Count the number of holes in the metal casing inside. Match a ball bearing for every hole.

Use marine or water resistant grease and fill back up the mechanism. Be sure to put the ball bearings back in place. Put the worm gear back to gether. Bolt it back on the cover when your sure everything is clean. Put your new spring on.

Put the fixed or new clutch cable on and attatch the cover. Adjust the clutch cable. Once done, adjust your clutch.

You will find that if you follow those instructions, your clutch will feel incredibly better and much much easier to use.

hi could you help i am trying to find the spring to replace the stretched one in the picture is it item 19 here

also today i caught 3 small ball bearings that fell out of the actuator
do you know how many are roughly in the actuator
the service engineer who was working on the bike wouldn't have seen any fall out either ''too dark''
are they as important as the stretched spring
or should i be looking for new small ball bearings
      once i have cleaned everything

Not the right part. Actually I think your looking at the shift indent spring.

You need part 26 from here...

The bearings are extremely important. If I remember right, I believe 11 of them. If you clean the parts, you will see a retainer with holes inside. That retainer has a hole for each bearing. So if your missing them, that is a problem and could cause the clutch to always be stiff or problems functioning right.

As an alternative, you can replace the entire unit by purchasing part 22.

Or... buy some spare bearings from someone who has replaced that unit.

hi thanks again for the help krey

got all the small bearings in with the help of a long wood barbeque skewer and my trusty tub of grease.
''dont try to put the bairings in dry folks'' or just buy a new actuator
one thing i didnt notice before i removed the acutator was that as you turn it
it opens itself out from the back of the unit revealing the stem that holds the ball bearings
i almost though it was time to buy a new one
it looked like a sealed unit before i removed it from the sprocket cover
never seen one of these before
            very fustrating little thing
