Do a search on wide tire. You'll find plenty. Basically though, a 170 is the widest tire you can safely put on a 4.5" rim and even then it depends on the tire. Put too wide a tire on a rim and you'll distort the tread portion of the tire beyond where it's supposed to go. In addition to creating a tire that has too little tread touching the ground when you're going straight, you may even create a situation where you have less tire in contact with the ground when you're turning than you would have with a narrower tire. (That's bad.)

I just stuck a 170/60r17 tire on a post rim (4.5") that i got off ebay and swapped it on my pre kat. took alittle work but the only real mods where stretching the swing arm, making a custom spacer, locating a post hub carrier and then modifying the rear brake arm! but it fits like a glove now!!!
You might want to look at the brake arm, 170 barely rubbed, 160 clears. I have a thread in here about post rim clearification with my end results/pics.1990 TURBO Kat 600 G15 hidden turbo 12psi

I have a 2005 750 Kat fitted with a 170/60 tyre. It looks better, but more importantly for my needs, is more stable and can carry more weight easily - the trade off is it is understandably slightly slower to turn in. Just check that your brand of 170/60 tyre is designed for the 4.5" rim - many are (including Michelin), some aren't. (Funnily enough, most 150/70 tyres are actually designed for a 4' rim.) You really don't want a 180. And my personal preference (contrary to many) is to avoid a 160 because it has a significantly lower profile / smaller diameter. (Even the 170/60 is slightly smaller in diameter than the stock 150/70.) Almost the last thing you need for handling is to lower the rear. Plus, it will throw out your speedo more and make using the centre stand more difficult.

the rear tire change only affects the post kats and not the pre's. Pre's use a speedo cable driven off the center of the front rim. Tire DIA changes make no affect on the pre's.
Supposidly the 170/60 tire has less contact patch than a 150/70 or 160 tire, but it looks better.
lower profile tire will increase road noise/roughness and lower the rear alittle. But that can be fixed by raising the rear to restore handling etc.1990 TURBO Kat 600 G15 hidden turbo 12psi
