  • Key broke off in seat mechanism..

Im new here, So sorry if this was not the right place to post this. Trying to get off my 1993 katana 750 seat so I can replace my gas tank, However when I looked into the key lock mechanism there was a key broken was wayyyy in there.. I dont know what to do, I cant get the seat off. IF anyone could get me some ideas that would be great. Also keep in mind I have a spare seat that I was kinda wanting to put on anyways so I dont care if your ideas involve destroying the seat on there.

    Thanks guys.

A new seat cable is less than $10.

Cut it, trim back the plastic casing at the end where you cut the cable so you can pull on the cable with pliers, seat will unlatch. Replace with new cable.

Yeah, it's a spring loaded mechanism. So, you could rig it to just pop off by pulling the cable if you really wanted.

Man lol. I think I will be ready to ride by summer after I get the new gas tank put on and a good tune up. Ive been searching on here but I cant seem to find exactly which year gas tanks will fit my 1993.

                  Depends on your need.

89-97 "pre" 600 and 750cc kats used the same tank design. Any of them will fit, mount, and match the fairing shape designs. Color can be fixed easy.

98-06 "post" 600 and 750cc kats used a slightly different fairing design for the tank shap, but the mounting points are exactly the same.

In other words... if you want to use the fairings, stick with pre tanks. If your not gonna use the main fairings (fightered look some call it) then post tanks will work for you as well just fine.

I am going to use the fairings so I will stick with the "PRE" tanks. Thank you much.

That could be why the key broke in the lock. Can you push the cable? The cable could be seized in the housing. If it like the 1100 then latch is at the back of seat. Try lightly pushing the back of the seat down when pulling the cable.

Try pushing down on the seat while pulling the cable? You can pull the rear fender to get to the latch if need be.

93 750?... that should be the dual cable setup.

1 cable under the fairing with just a pull ring.

1 cable attached to the key release.

That's a total of 2 latches associated with this seat.

In addition, the rear of the seat "pops" on and off with 2 little hooks moulded into the seat pan that catch onto 2 squared U brackets on the sub frame...

In other words... to take the seat off, you pull hard up on the far rear of the 750 seat to unhook the clips. Once those are unhooked, push with your fist in the center of the passenger seat area to take pressure off the catch, and pull the D ring release cable. Then, once that is release, you use the key relese cable to release the final latch and remove the seat.
