  • Rear Tire Bounce/Vibration

Hey guys, lately Ive noticed that when Im leaning my bike (2000 Kat 750) into curve fairly agressively, every now and then the rear tire will start to bounce at a high frequency until I bring the bike more upright. I dont think that its the tire as Ive been through two tires which hasnt changed the symptom. Also, the tire is properly inflated and is not cupped. My first guess is a bad rear shock but again its a high frequency bounce, almost vibration in manner. It doesnt necessarily feel like a damping issue. Furthermore, at least from visual inspection the shock doesnt seem to be leaking. Any ideas???

Are you sure the rear wheel is lined up properly? Don't go by the hash marks.... just my thoughts.
sigpicLife throws you curves......enjoy the ones you get when riding.

It sounds like the tire may be slipping and gripping, basically skipping when you lean it too far. You say you've been through two tires. Were they both the same brand of tire? it may be that this particular brand of tire is too hard and doesn't have good grip when you get aggressive in the corners. Also, is the tire properly balanced? Again, something that could show up as you deform the tire in a corner.

The tires were both Battleax BT023's and they ARE on the sport touring side compound wise. Maybe Ill try a different tire before I start throwing big money at a new shock.

I got same tires and never experienced what you have. But who knows.

Sound like you reached the limit of the bike setup i.e tyre shocker and frame...time to get a racing bike....

As stated before this skip and grip symptom happens in bike racing,i'm guessing you have found the bikes limit!

Could be the tire, could be the suspension setup.

I would suggest paying close attention to the rear tire and it's wear/condition just after this happens. How the rubber looks can tell you a lot about what is going on.

Skipping on the rear wheel is usually a suspension setup problem. I'd suggest first at least attempting to set the sag for your weight.

Either your preload is way off or your shock needs rebuilt or replaced

Mine did the same thing, compression was fine but I had no rebound control. The Tire would skip under hardaccel orin turns. I replaced the shock with a used one, set up the preload and its back better then normal

I don't know if a wheel bearing problem would manifest as a skip, I would think more of a wobble.

Thanks for all the input guys. My first thought was a bad shock. I know that it isnt the setup as its already been set up for my weight. Of course I want to believe that it isnt the shock as that will cost me much more than changing my tire brand.

Another piece of info. that I should have shared earlier, the bike has only done this oh maybe three times in the last year and each time was during relatively cool (under 50 degrees) conditions. So...im leaning toward the tire compound being a bit too stiff for my riding style.

How about you not "bounce" into my lane until you figure it out. Some great advice was offered already. Maybe you should decide on some decent tires that will "suit your style"........ I run on Q2's......wet, dry, cold...... they haven't let me down.

He's right, though. Get suitable skins and be less of a hazard to everyone else. Never, ever go cheap on tires or drive components (chain/sprockets).
