  • What a day...

So today I am on my way to Baltimore (about 20 miles) and I am driving about 80mph which is mostly typical of traffic in this area. Everything is going fine then my bike starts loosing power and sputtering or jolting'ish. I just imagine its a bump and gas it a little....Next thing i know the bike is down to 50mph and is racing down to 0. The bike turns off and I coasted to the side...

I have no idea what to do so I check the gas and its fine (both gauge and tank). Then my thought is that it is overheating somehow. I sit there for about 15 mintues and decide what to do as cars fly past. I decide to start it up and give it another go. Wont start without the choke all the way on...weird. I get it started let it run for a second (on choke) for a minute and try and go. Does it again about a mile down the road (goes, loses power then stalls). At this point I am 15 miles from home, I literally was on the side of the road 2 hours. Broke down 6 different times...finally make it about 4 miles from the house and at a gas station fill it up....Runs fine the rest of the way home...

I am guessing that I somehow had bad gas....although I've road it the past two days each for like 3 miles.

Either way....horrible. Somewhat relieved it was the gas....somewhat aggravated at a crappy night...

Lastly? if each morning the condensation is on the outside of the seat tank and bike in general is it possible that it was in my tank?

You say the gas was fine. Define "fine". Opening the tank, it looks like there's quite a bit of fuel left when you need to be switching to reserve. Speaking of which, did you try that?

By fine i mean just a tad over 1/4. But I did try to switch to reserve anyways. Of course no help. I posted up a question in another section and I am fairly sure that there was water in my gas. Which was causing That mess to happen.

Possible. The only problem with that theory is that water settles to the bottom of the tank and the petcock flows fuel from the bottom when you're on reserve. Does the problem come back if you switch to reserve? If so then you may need to run the tank down to reserve again and then drain out what's left to get rid of the water. You can try some Heat to dissolve the water but the carb internals don't seem to like alcohol.

Guys....This actually happened again today on the way to work. I have a full tank of gas and last night after I filled up it was fine on the ride home. I dont think its possible for the tank to get watery over one night....

So....What else could it be? Sparks????

Run some fuel from the tank into a clear glass jar. You'll be able to see pretty quick if there's water in there. If there is then you've got to get rid of it. Just adding fresh gas on top of the water will stir things up and get you a useable mixture for a bit but then when things have a chance to settle again (like overnight) you'll have all the water in the bottom of the tank again.
