  • What Is The 2nd Air Setup On A Katana

Hello, I was wondering about the the black rectangular plastic box on the left side near the front of the gas tank. Its the 2nd air setup. Off the box, pointing down, is a round plastic fitting that sucks air when the motor is running. Is there supposed to be a hose hooked to this? What is this apparatus for? 2006 600, Thanks for any info

Yes, that is part of it.

The 2nd Air sytem, also refered to CA emmision junk or the PAIR system is for California model bikes specifically. Please be aware, CA model bikes were sold all over the US if supply demanded a bike and one of the CA models was available for shipment.

That said, you can completely remove the CA system if your not in CA. I would hesitate to do so there incase it's inspected for it or have very stringent exhaust emmisions inspections where you are.

The full system includes a charcoal canister under the left rear of the tail, multiple hoses connected that to the carbs and the intersecting with the vacuum line for the petcock. Also direct under the tank at the stearing neck will be a few metal canisters and rubber hoses, those will connect to the box you asked about. And finally, there will rubber hoses running to metal bolt on ports directly under each exhaust outlet on the engine.

Bascially the 2nd air system collects fumes from the fuel tank and from the carbs then pumps it back into the exhaust just as it comes out of the engine so that it's burn up in the hot exhaust to reduce the amount of fumes that is reased into the air.

Links to the parts for the CA system fyi...

Thanks for the reply. Wow, this is interesting because my bike came new from a Suzuki dealer near New York City. But as you said, CA models were sold around the country. Im going to check and see if I have all these canisters and hoses, but Im almost positive there are no rubber hoses going to each exhaust outlet. But I do have the rectangle box that sucks air into it as shown in the parts fiche. Is whats weird is they only show the E33 2nd air for k4 and k5. Did they not sell K6 in CA, thus not showing 2nd air microfice for K6? Thanks for replying, Im going to have to check my bike out further to see if it is indeed a CA model sold in NY.

CA bikes can be anywhere,m always check! I had to leave my home state of NV and fly to CO to pick up my non CA spec '11 C14 in CO. The CA spec and non CA spec had different model numbers. States that neighbor CA get CA spec bikes. The big three will often bring in more CA spec bikes than they need for CA as they can be sold in any state, not just CA.
On my '91 Katana 1100, I got more power by making it non CA- the improvement came from changing all the carb jets to non CA, check it out. Also has much better driveability.
In case you are wondering, the difference between a CA C14 and a non CA C14 is that the CA spec has evap plumbing and a different ecu (hate to find out how that is different).

thanks for the reply. It looks like my NY Katana is a CA model. It has the little pipes coming out over top the exhaust header outlets. Well looks like I have something to do this winter.........take all that stuff off and change my carb jets. I dont plan on moving to Ca, LOL. If anyone has some tips or suggestions on taking the smog stuff off and carb settings, please pass it on, would really appreciate it. Thanks, Chris

Yeah Im surprised too. But, I got such a good deal on it I still would have bought it even if I knew I was buying a CA model. Didnt even think to check for a CA model when I was looking at it to buy, I mean who da thunk it? Oh well it runs perfect, I wonder if taking the smog crap off will screw up the ECU or anything? I just did a search on this sight and found info Kreylyn posted awhile ago about decalifornication. I also see on Ebay they sell smog removal kits with the engine block plates and caps for the carbs. Anyone have suggestions on the best carb jet sizes and settings after a desmog? Is it "arsenic" on this forum that does custom carb building with jet kits installed? Thanks for any help, Chris
