  • accidentally red-lined the bike

I don't know what happened, I think I was singing to myself or something on my ride to work this morning, I wasn't really paying attention to the bike (bad, I know)

anyway i think it happened in 2nd or 3rd gear. it wasn't a WOT continuous bang off the red line, just a hop and I was like WTF? and switched gears.

    bad? how bad?

These bikes have rev limiters built in. I wouldn't go bouncing off the limiter all the time, but I don't think you've done any damage.

I figured it wasn't a terrible thing, there were no holes punched in the crank case but just wanted to be sure!

        Thanks guys!

You'll be alright, promise. It's not like you were running 10+grand for 15 minutes or anything.

          Think about it like this:
If you were trying to ride hard and did it kinda on purpose (nevermind how fast you would be going, just banging through a couple gears) - would you think anything of it?

Because that's sorta what it sounds like you did, just not intentionally.

My main concern came from not knowing if the bike had a red line or not, I tried googling where it was - 12k 13k 14k? and could not come across a definitive answer to it. Sometimes you have to learn by doing and sometimes it's by accident haha

for anyone else interested, when I felt the bump the needle was at 12k rpm but it could have been on the return.

Rev limiter is at 11500 for the post 750 Kat, guess it would be the same for 600...

Your bike is done. Sell it as quickly as possible before it asplodes.

SERIOUSLY, even if you spent half an hour on the revlimiter, I wouldn't worry too much. If the oil is in good shape, and the internals were in good shape, you won't hurt anything. You might shorten the engine life a little, but the Kat is built brick outhouse tough, so it will still keep on going and going and going.

                Just because they sound the same doesn't mean they are: there≠their≠they're; to≠too≠two; its≠it's; your≠you're; know≠no; brake≠break

Tach needle is not really all that accurate (realistically I only trust it within +/- 1000 rpm) so if you glimpsed it at 12k, I wouldn't get excited at all, probably realistically hit a max of right at 11. Didn't hurt a thing. Did it act at all different the remainder of the ride? No? You're fine. Stop worrying and learn to love the ride

from what i've been reading on this forum im learning none of the gauges on the kat are accurate! speedo, tach, gas, actually my clock seems to keep good time... but you're right i need to stop worrying about it and let go of the memory of when it left my stranded 50kms from home.

I don't shift till I hit the limiter...You can stay at WOT and the limiter takes care of the blip for you, no clutch necessary (upshifting).

I was just feeding you a line of crap there, but seriously, most manufacturers set the electrics well below what the engine will spin to.
