  • Melted plastic in my air box!

So my idle has been jumping all over for a few weeks right. I decided to check my carbs out and when I removed the air box......fire damage. I,m no mechanic but I think something is wrong. Please help!

Backfiring through the carbs into the airbox could explain it but I would imagine that to be highly noticeable. Sit in traffic for a while recently?
90% of motorcycle forum members do not have a service manual for their bike.

I would suggest a valve adjustment. What may be happening is your valves are so far out of specs that the intake valves are not shut during ignition, which allows ignited fuel vapors to run wildly through out you intake. This can cause your carbs and air box to catch fire. which could lead to a melted bike. don't ride it until you know your valves are within spec.

          Source a 93 Gsxr 600 I used to own.

P.S. you may want to make sure off of your o-rings are ok in the carbs.

I have no idea how to do a valve adjustment. Would that explain no power at low rpm and an up and down idle?

Is there a wiki for valve adjustment?

This is my first bike but i,m not bad at fixing things with the proper instructions. this bike is a 93 gsx 600f but it has a 98 gsx 600 motor in it. I think the carbs are off the 93 though.

update to my simple yes. yes, and it could be other things as well. but the first thing to address is the valve adjust. because there is no carb- fiddling in the world that will make that motor run better if the valves are out of spec.

good luck... make sure you have the proper size feeler gauges. I had to buy another feeler gauge because mine was too big... and ID whether or not you have shims or tappets.

                            Yeah, a 93 600 is shims, then I remembered he said it had a 98 600 engine.
