  • why a katana?

in short, why do you ride a katana?

long form, i had a triumph street triple 675 as my first bike. this bike was everything i couldve wanted, sporty but not punishing ergos, unique on the street and just had some sexy aesthetics i could stare at all day. sounded amazing and smooth triple cylinder. i had the bike for less than a year, put down half financed the other half. lost my job shortly after, decided to sell the bike when payments were getting difficult.

so sad to see it go.

time goes on and the need to ride comes back (how did i live without a bike those years? no idea). I acquired my pre kat 600 from a friend of my dads. he had it in his garage sitting there since he got his new bike and he said i could ride it for the season. when i go pick it up i was quite surprised to see he signed over all the paperwork to me. basically he gifted me a kat. it did have issues and i'm paying for em now but still...free bike!

for me the katana is just returning to riding on two wheels. it makes me appreciate a motorcycle just for being what it is. after the financial bull**** i went through with having to sell the triumph the katana taught me that it doesn't have to be sexy and new to have fun and feel rewarded in this sport. i don't care that she's a heavy slug. i don't care that everyone around me is riding bikes less than 5 or 10 years old. i like it because it keeps me from hopping in the cage and it still gives me the thrill.

on other forums i always get the jokes. if you mention any mechanical problem the first remark is "problem is you're riding a katana LOL" and at the shop i just dropped her off at the other day, the mechanic says to me "you know i'm gonna get in trouble for taking this bike in right? i'm supposed to sell you a new bike!" i get this attitude towards this model A LOT. the first guy i got to check it out (family moto mech) says "oh what bike did you get? ......katana? WHY?" (sumbitch rides a tl1000 :jealous

anyway. it seems like theres the majority of people here, myself included posting the newb threads like how do i get more power/fatter tire/hids/etc. (i myself started the air filter upgrade thread and now see the idiocy of my thinking) but there's a few of you who seem to be the dedicated katana following. so my question is why do you guys still ride katanas when they continually get **** on by a ton of other moto riders?

Obviously, you haven't ridden one long enough to know - invite some of your gixxer buddies out to ride, and do a nice all day route - see how many of em are still comfortable at the end of the day. One reason I still ride mine is the low cost of ownership - Kat's really don't require much more than simple maintenance: oil changes, tires, brakes, etc as compared to the more glamourous SS bikes. Plus insurance is less as they are considered sport tourers, and not true sport bikes.

I like the looks, the ergos, the ease of working on them, the easy of modifying them, and over all... I like the looks.

I have quite a few reasons for a Katana that are probably unique and not really what most people would consider appropriate. My question is, why not a Katana?

Seems the folks that bag on them are less about the riding and more about the image. The most skilled and talented riders I know will ride anything with 2 wheels and have never bagged on anyone for their bike choice. They actually respect the Kats for what they bring to the table.
Get over yourself. For me to think you are an idiot, I would first need to think of you.

this rings true to me as well.

i actually have ridden the kat on and off for about 2 years now. it's more aggressive than my last bike in terms of ergos but way more comfy than a gsxr i took a half hour ride and i was already feeling the stiffness.

i actually love the looks of early 90s SBs so, its right up my alley

Why a KATANA? Well, one fell into my lap. Picked up a basket case that had been disassembled by a guy who couldn't put it back together. I've gone all thru it now. Tires, brakes, wiring, valves, a killer set of carbs from ARSENIC, new seats, new grips, mirrors, lights and signals, shovel chop, gosh, I dont remember it all. I'm still under a thousand bucks into it. Looks like it's worth about 3 times that, tho I know it would never bring it. What it will bring me is a few years of "free" riding. I can buy me some gas when I dont have a payment book, if ya know what I mean! Lol! Nope it's not the latest and greatest. But my last bike was a former drag bike- a lowered, bored stroked and stretched Kawasaki Z-1, it was so uncomfortable that I could only ride it about 15 minutes. I've got a new hip and still need a new knee, and 2 fused discs in my back. Even so, I can ride this Kat for 3 hours. Plus, that Kawasaki might as well of had a target painted on it! It was a police squad magnet.

Great price and at the right time, but must I admit remember seeing the old GSXF Slingshot as a younger lad and liking it then, seem to stick with me.

my kat is comfy and it looks good although i could care less what other riders think of my bike. ive only had mine a few months and put over 1500 miles on it. changed the oil and filter nothing else although i think soon ill have to tighten the clutch cable . the bike is stable at speed and manuverable when needed. what else could you want from your iron horse ..
im an american proud and free , a son of the south dont tread on me.

hmm my reasons for riding a katana~ well i got mine as a first bike because a former coworker was offering to sell it to me for cheep. 1500 for a bike thats running? hell yes! i was naive a bit about bikes then and now. if i knew a bit more maybe i would have chosen a different bike to start on. but as time passes by and more i ride my bike and more i see it sitting there lookin at me with its big ol bug eyes, it seems to look better every time and i'm coming to love the way how it looks.

i think my front fork seals are shot to hell and keep on hitting the wheel cover to my front faring but still ride able:P too scared to try a wheelie on it with the front as is. but as for just normal riding, this thing is more than a blast i could as for
