  • Dropped my Katana - cracked trans cover, is motor okay?

So go figure within my first few days of bike ownership this would happen..

I've been nervous every day about letting my bike sit on kickstand in my driveway as it's sloped and never feels very stable. However every time I leave I have to back my bike out of the garage, put the stand down and get off and use the garage door opener in my car to shut the garage door. Did that today, and about 10-15 seconds after I got off it it fell over.

Aside from roughing up my paint, it cracked my transmission case cover. For starters, does anyone know where I can buy a new one aside from looking for a used one?

Number 2, the bike was idling when this happened and idled for about 3 seconds while it was on its side before shutting off. Do you think the motor is okay, is there an automatic cut off? I'm really scared if something locked up.

Just not a good day for me.

Everything is fine, just need to replace the cracked part. Online you can find new (expensive) so most go for used.

is there a specific name for the trans cover? I can't find it anywhere new or used, mainly was hoping to find one off ebay
and is the cover the same between the 600 and the 750?

There is a specific name, if you look up the model and year of your bike, check the fiche on the parts site labeled "engine covers". They are all numbered and named.

It's the same for all kat engines. Only the color is different from 98+ being silver, and 97- being black.

if you dropped it on the left side, you probably cracked the cone shaped "cover, starter"... if on the right, you have "cover, clutch)(the one with the oil window, and "cover, signal generator" the one further towards the front

you can hit Ronayers.com and select your bike year and look for "crank case cover" on the fiche.

for example, here is the liunk for the 1999 model, the parts are same for 89-06 aside for the color, as Krey said

as Krey says, new is pricey, so check ebay .
