  • close call this morning

i was just out for a short joy ride this morning . out on a country rode doing 45 in a 45, just putting. came around a corner and theres a opposum in my lane right in front of me . another car was coming in the other lane so i had no idea which way the critter was going to go. i went wide right and got off the road . i had slowed down a good bit but iwas stilll hair raising. this zuke doesnt do as well off road as my old DR did. im lucky it was a stable shoulder that was pretty even with the road. i didnt panic but it was close .
im an american proud and free , a son of the south dont tread on me.

Next time just go straight at it. I'd rather kill a possum then take a fall.

They know what to do, if not, it is natural selection trimming the herd. Nature wouldn't want an opossum that can't dodge a non aggressive beast to reproduce now would it.

You ever hit a 'possum? They're solid. They'll cave in an oil pan on an '84 Charger. Go ahead, ask me how I know this. That's one heck of a speed bump to hit at 45 mph and their instinct when threatened is to stay stock still--hence the saying, to "play 'possum". That thing wasn't going anywhere.

Glad you kept it together. Next time something like that happens though, I'd suggest staying on the pavement to one side or the other of the 'possum.

I always try and avoid an animal, I'm not sure I could intentionally hit one. Glad everything worked out.

possums aren't that bad to hit... but i have seen raccoons the size of my dog!! so yeah while i would some times rather hit the critter than go down , sometimes hitting the critter means going down too. so most of the time it's better to try not to hit it.

I actually have hit one with a car before and it was quite a speed bump.

If it's a smaller animal, it's safer just to run it over. If it's a dog or something....then you move over. Glad you're safe though

Somebody beat me to it... Seriously, if you have time to recognize that it's a possum, then know, it's not going anywhere.

QFT. I hit a raccoon that did close to 4 grand of damage to my car.
