  • Need help ASAP

Well were going to bike week from sc, about an 5 hours from home. On the Interstate the group I was riding with constantly hit 90 mph. About 2 hrs in my bike stalls, pull over sits for five mins cranks and goes 30 more miles where it stalls again. I think its over heating don't know for sure. The oil is 100 miles old the bike has a 5 degree ignition timer, two brothers pipe, and Ivan's jet kit. Is there anything I can do to get back home

check your sidestand switch, and clutch switch. make sure the wires for the clutch switch aren't backing off, and the sidestand switch is fully engaged/sidestand is all the way up.

I once had my bike die on the road because of a sloppy sidestand making the plunger come out of the switch enough to kill the bike...

    edit:

year and cc of bike would also be useful

Didnt think about that its a 2001 600.Ok I'll try that. It sounds like it running out of gas but I have 3/4 of a tank. I heard that sometimes when it overheats it will evaporate the gas in the bowls of the carbs

That's not gonna be it, but the kinked fuel line, stopped up filter, or faulty petcock will do exactly what your talking about.

kinked/cracked vaccuum line leading to it perhaps? also, make sure the arrow is pointing 'down' for the on position, and not on prime, pointing towards the back of the bike...

Clogged vent line to the tank can also cause this.

if your bike is running lean, it will cause it to heat up, and even more so at higher speeds. this is fact. when an engine overheats, it will start to seize, or "tighten up", which will cause it to bog down, much like running out of gas. this is also fact.

so it is very possible that your bike is running as bit too lean, but haven't really noticed it until you started pushing it at 90mph.

I am pretty sure someone will contradict me, and that's ok.....but I strongly suggest you consider what I said and make 100% certain you are not running too lean because you can only over heat and bog down your engine so much before it is toast.

the other answers have merit, but I can't believe a line will suddenly kink on it's own from running at 90mph. could possibly be the gas filter.....but my gut is telling me you are just running too lean to be able to do 90mph for any extended period.

easy way to tell is the next time it stalls, try to start it up right away. if it turns over really slow, like your battery is lacking juice, then you definitely are over heating.

usually I am all for checking the simple things first, but if you suspect it is over heating, then go with your gut feeling because this sort of problem can be critical....and expensive. my advice.....keep to the speed limit until you get back home and verify that you are not running too lean.

IF you were running a constant 90mph the entire way you would have reached Daytona in just under 4 hours, so if it's fine at slower speeds, but cutting out when you up the pace to 90, my guess would be that the fuel filter isn't flowing fast enough to keep up with the carbs at higher speeds. By chance did the fuel filter that's on it come from an autoparts store? Sounds like a fuel starvation problem. If the petcock was on prime, a kinked/loose vaccum line to the petcock wouldn't be the problem.
