  • GS 1000SZ Engine

Hello all. So, I've got this old engine from a 1982 GS1000SZ that I'm interested in selling off. I was wondering if anyone here may be interested in it. I know everyone is putting Gixer & Bandit engines in their chassis but just maybe someone is looking to build up a liter class roadracer or something. I had never run the engine. It was purchased in a low-sided Kat back in late eighties ( right-hander lowside- too much front brake I'll bet ) and the bodywork was destroyed. Well, that and the tank because the clip-on punctured it. Also, the ignition was removed using the asphault grinding method. I checked the crank runout with a couple of different dial indicators and found no problems with runout. The insurance company totaled the bike. I spotted it in the back of a shop I frequented in Fremont, Ca. and inquired about it. I had a kitten of my own and was always on the prowl for parts. The shop owner said "make me an offer" which I did and we loaded the bike into my pick-up. I scored a nice gauge assy., a Bassani Superbike pipe, and an untouched wiring loom. Any-who, I have had this engine in a clean, dry environment, oiled the cylinders every year and been turning the thing over by hand. I have all of the covers, most all of the fasteners. What do you guys think I should be asking for it. I'm in Loveland, Colorado.
Thanks in advance for your input.

You'll probably make more parting it out. '82s had different crank & rods. As well as lighter rotor. I think different cams & some special clutch parts.
Too bad you're so far away. I'd love to have it.
Also, your motor is a later in the year production model. You can tell by the rectangular breather cover. Early year models had an hour glass shape.
If you do decide to part it out, let me know.

I'd been toying with parting it out. I just thought maybe someone would want the original lump, just as it came from the bike. Interesting note about the breather though. Didn't know that. Of all the things they could have changed I wonder why the breather shape bugged them so much. I dunno!

I would assume for carb tuning to accommodate more aggressive cams.
90% of motorcycle forum members do not have a service manual for their bike.

Like I said, I'd love to have it. Got one just like it sitting on the floor of my garage. Getting it shipped to CA would be prohibitive, cost wise.

Yeah, I know. Shipping costs bux!
I sold an 1150 engine last year. It went back east and I think transport was around $150.00. Buyer had to have the engine and he paid shipping so o.k. by me.
Do you think any of the 1000S engine parts would be deemed " special " or should I go into general part-out mode on this thing like I would with an 1100? You know, watch other auctions and price items to sell accordingly. Thanks for any input. I've decided to move this thing and will be fairly pro-active in e-baying myself silly.

I think you are right Greg. I came up with a number in my head for the complete engine then started looking for parts sold from a like engine. Definately worth more in bits.
