  • First bike for a tall guy

    I am 6'5", with 34" inseam.

I had my mind set on Ninja 500 for the last few weeks and tomorrow I was going to pickup my own but just today a friend took me to see some stores with 2nd hand bikes and I saw it - 2000 Katana 750 (or GXR 750 F how it is called here in Europe).

I immediately liked the looks of it it and once I sat on it, I felt very comfortable. It was so much more a bike than spartan EX. The effect was, I cancelled my purchase of EX500.

So now I am browsing ebay and local ads but I wonder if I should go for 750 or maybe 600?

    The purpose of the bike:
    1. daily commute of 40 miles
    2. weekend trips of 400-1000 miles.

It is going to be my first bike, though. I have my license since 2 weeks and have not ridden a bike outside of the course. I am not a retard, though, and can control myself with the throttle.

Every now and then, I would want to put some luggage on the bike, like top box or tank bag, but I read somewhere that with the top box 750 becomes very unstable at speed.

Anyway, any thoughts will be welcomed. Cheers

Get the 750, it's still only 100hp so not too easy to get into trouble. Very comfy for commuting and long rides.

How is the wind protection? Does the wind shield direct the air flow straight into your face?

As far as the "purpose of the bike", that is very much what I ride and this bike is very suitable for exactly that. I have a 600 but would go with the 750 if the opportunity were there. It's not too much power but a wee bit extra for when you need to dodge a cager.

Im 6'6 and my 2002 kat -600cc fit me fine , it is a bit smaller then the 750cc but it will do everything the 750 can do. mpg is better and close to 200 miles a tank . the 600 kats are trouble free if you get a clean low mileage one 12k-20k .and was owned by a rider not some poor kid ,it shows . I got my kat up to 119 mph and had some left . you wont be going over 90-100 mph then you need to tuck in or your neck gets drawed back from the wind . Get a katana 600cc in yellow gets long bright looks tires /chain / and brakes cost $$$ so look at those things and leave the motor stock.

You might want to look for an aftermarket windscreen to redirect the wind over your noggin.

heya lockheed i had a 500 ninja loved it, but it was just to small for me, my friends said it looked like a bicycle under me.... im bout your height and was close to 300 lbs. But my 750 kat fits me sooo much better... i say go for the kat unless you want a little stunt bike because with my size the 500 was easily 12'oclocked like a toy lol and handled nimbly.
                  GL and be ride safe.
a voice came to me and said, sacrifice that which you love the most (my girl and my bikes)
so i lied and gave up my girl.

You'd be tired with the 500 Ninja in no time. Go for the 750. I just picked up a 750 Kat about 2 weeks ago.

6'2 220 lb begginer rider and I just got my '02 750 bout a montha ago. I've taken several long rides. Comfortable with plenty of power for me. Taller windsheild would be nice for longer highway, but not sure on the look.

                          Thanks for all the answers!

Is it ok to buy a '98-01' katana (be it 600 or 750) with 25000-30000 miles on the clock? Is this a sensible mileage?

I did some calculations and over a 6-month period, I would be putting on it:
                          - 5200 miles for work commute (90% motorway)
                          - 2500-6000 miles for long trips on a mix of motorway and b-roads

The two bikes I am looking at right now:

Any comments? How much should I offer on either of them? Or is it better to wait for something else?

Does the extra cost of mpg and insurance is worth the benefit of 750 over 600?
I have never really ridden before and although I am 6'5", I am also 180lbs.

I am also 6'-5" . I have a 750 . As far as the windscreen for protection, doesn't help much. I am actually going to cut mine down a bit,to let the flow of air hit me lower instead of in the face/helmut
