well Yesterday afternoon my friend went to go look at an 88 cbr "hurricane" and wanted me to go with to have a second opinion i guess. Well firtst off it was a 600 had the same power ratings as the kat 600 and weight roughly 50lbs less. So as we looked at it there was obvious wear and tear clips missing that hold fairing, blinker held on by zip ties and other little things. as far as the mechanical condition it sounded good and looked good from what we could see. Both tires were new and fresh oil and plugs. i as well as him test drove it and i saw some things that needed some adjusting. throttle was way sensitive just resting your hand on the grips which made engine rev a lil bit. stuff like that not big issues but easy to deal with.

As for the test drive (mind i read reviews on this bike) the bike was smooth, quick and responsive just like they said. Although the kats are more confortable than this CBR. but the biggest issue ppl complain about this CBR was vibrations from engine transfering though the handle bars. i did noticed that as well which after long rides i could see a persons hands feeling numb after a long ride. The engine was a bit noisier than the kat too. But all in all it was every bit like the kat except it felt it handled better. so i told my friend i think the bike would be a good fit for him. he said he liked it and felt confortable and rode good for his size too. he bought it and know i got another buddy to ride with lol.

I was wondering as well has anybody else rode one of these honda Hurricanes if so is there anything he should look for as a future issue like reliablity. i noticed this bike looked like it wasnt very user friendly like the kat when working on it.

Vibration? These bikes were supposed to smooth, afterall, they did replace the V4 bikes. I bet that bike simply needs a carb synch.
And as far as the overall bike goes, how good were they really? I remember that Honda sold a butt load of the Hurricanes, yet they all disappeared. Were they all wrecked or did they have some engine defect like the V4 motors? I haven't seen any representatives of the Hurricane family in the last ten years (have seen a couple of VFR500's and a few V65 Sabres though).

        From what I remember...
Honda dropped the Hurricane name in response to the insurance companies jacking up the rates on anything that had a nickname. After that they just called them CBRs. The Hurricanes were good bikes but there weren't that many sold. Honda dropped all advertising for the VFR (V4 engine) as well as dropping the Sabre and Magna (got one on my back porch now!) and then had to try to compete against the GSXRs, FZs and Ninjas. Top Gun sold a lot of Ninjas and so Honda pretty much concentrated on the track with the CBRs for a few years. The late 80s CBRs weren't V4s, weren't as fast as the GSXRs, weren't as cheap as the FZs and weren't under Tom Cruise's butt. All of that made for great reviews but pretty anemic sales.

I was 18 when the V4's came out and was putting about on a '80 GS550e.It seemed liked everyone (I lived in socal at the time) had a V4 and those 500 red, white and blue bikes were every where. I knew a guy with one who laid it down near my house, died right there.
Some say that they ditched the V4 motors because of cam failures. I think that might have hurt their rep but I also think that V4 motors were more $ to make than an inline, so a couple of good reasons for the Hurricane series. They did tame the 1000 down, change the name to CBR, linked the brakes. I saw a leftover model and almost bought it.
I never saw many of them when they were fresh out, it seemed like people preferred Ninja's and gxsr's.I had a buddy with a Ninja 750r and that was one sweet bike.
The one thing I remember about the Hurricanes was an insurance claim I handled, where the biker lived and the car driver died. A guy on a Hurricane 1000 t-boned a Honda CRX si (remember those?). The young lady in it had the sunroof open and no seat belt. Somehow, she ended up out of the sunroof, the car was split in two. The rider had a helmet and suit, flew over, but outside of some minor injuries (I forgot exactly what), he lived. In office gallows humor was that people usually have some kind of warning when a Hurricane is about to hit.
