  • Who's running 170/60/17's

I was wondering who is running a 170/60/17 rear tire.I just had a Michelin Pilot Power in this size put on my 2006 Kat & it looks great.I rode it for a little while today & it handled great.I could not really tell a differance from the factory 150's.Please list, good or bad any experiances you have had with a 170.

Jeremy - great question, I am interested in the responses as well. I'm looking to get a little more rear tire width and height. I've heard both sides of the argument, so let's hear some real world application experiences.

Check out this post - it's pretty helpful.

If it has to do with tires & wheels, then you're in the right place.
Best tire for a Katana? What's the tread life on a particular brand ? Size of a stock rim?
Chains & Sprockets? These questions and so much more are addressed right here !

There are only a few manufacturers that make a 170/60r17 that fit the wheel. you would have to ask the company to see what the smallest rim that size will fit on... When i had my post I had a conti and a shinko in the 170/60/17 size.
I did the research before I got them.. Hope this helps...

This is an old argument that has plaguing this forum for many years. What size fits and what "looks" good. As stated above do the research and be safe..there was someone that preached that they put a 180 on the stock Kat wheel and didn't have any issues. Look up some of the posts from Cyberpoet (he is no longer with us but his posts and messages still are with us here).

i'm running a conti motion 170/60 on my post Kat. it does okay. i'm not able to get to the edge even in the mountains like i could with a 150/70. next time i'll go to a 160/60.

I run a 160/60/17 and am really happy with it. Not sure if I would go any larger. I'm sure it will affect the turn in on your bike.

I'm currently looking at the Conti Road Attack, as I have to get bike MOT'd (tested), it is a bit squared off, but was when I bought it. It currently has a 160/60/17 (Conti Motion) on rear and will be happy to replace with same size.

my vote would be for 160....I think anything better would compromise my riding style possibly based off of the research I did before I stepped up my size...I have personally not ridden a Kat with a 170...Im sure it works fine on straights and mild corners, but, I would think it would adversely effect the turn-in vs. the 160 on heavy corners...?

How do you ride, and, have you noticed any difference yet on sweeping corners when you're at full lean? Or any difference on the turn-in?

I've been running a 170 for two years now, and I have not had any issues with turn in, or cornering. My chicken strips are less than a quarter of an inch wide.

I would never suggest a 180, for 2 reasons: That is cutting it to close in the alloted space of the swing arm, and I fear that the dimensions of the stock rim (4.5) would deform the tire and make it unsafe.

The 170s get pinched as well, just not enough to make it obviously mushroom out.

I have run 170 Power Pilots since trading in the Dunlops...I think it grips 100% better then the 150's and I have no turn in problems....same as stated...1/4" chicken strips...

1/4" equals about 6.4mm. So your extra 10mm in width has only netted you 3.6mm on the tire. Hardly worth it when a 150 turns in loads faster and is actually designed for the rim.

And the PP grip better because you only have Dunlops to compare it to, of course it's better, but it's still too big.

Awww man I was asking around about this matter, I was told by some members that i shouldn't go above 150, now here I'm reading that some of you guys already went to 160/60's! Damn I wanted more tire, mainly for the look, but was told that it will make a dramatic change to the 150/70 ride i am used to! To make matters worse i just ordered the 150/70's!!!! Damn, Damn Damn! lol!!!

The 150/70 is the proper tire. If you have a post 98 bike the 160/60 is the proper tire. The 170s, even the ones designed for a skinny rim still pinch.

The smaller tires handle better, and thats a fact, say what you want but arguing with the laws of physics doesn't work.

Want a phat tire? Either widen your swingarm and do the work or buy a real sportbike that uses one.
