  • Price on a 1000/ 1100 engine?

Haven't been around for quite awhile due to heart issues and by-pass surgery back a few months. I'm starting to come around now and am thinking about diving back into the Kat project this winter.

As I last reported, I'm having issues with it not shifting ( but it does when on the jack). As its only a 750 I am starting to figure it might be easier and more fun to drop in a bigger mill rather than trying to sort out the tranny in this one.

So the question is how much should I expect to pay for a stock working 1000 or 1100 ( and in decent condition i.e. drop in shape) here in Canada?

I'd appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

    Cheers,

well I will staert off by saying that I am glad you are feeling better. :

as for the cost....I am suspecting a complete 1000 (because you need EVERYTHING including electrical and carbs), it will cost you a pretty penny. well over a grand for sure. maybe $1500 or more.

as for my thoughts....go with the 1100. much easier swap.

as for the 1100 (1127), you are in luck, if you are serious. I have everything you need. wiring harness, cdi, complete engine plus the carbs...even the oil cooler. although I am kinda tired of making the offer cuz you are like the gazillionth one on here who "inquired" about the engine swap....and I made pretty much all of them a great offer. no takers though....which makes me believe most were just dreamers and window shoppers.

so if you are serious, pm me and we will talk $$$. and with you being in Canada, shipping will be cheap. I shipped a complete engine from Quebec to Edmonton for $95.

OR....I can sell you a 750 pop-up. one needs new rings for sure. I rode it for a summer and it went great, but smoked. the other one....guy was riding it and said it was fine except he was having carb issues. I bought it and stored it. both are 100% complete. I can let you have them both for not much more than you would probably pay for a 1000 engine. I will cry after letting them go for what I willing to right now, but all these bikes are taking up much needed space.

      Wow, that's cheap shipping...

Nah, too much power, my bike would be impounded within a week...

I live in BC, 40 over and do not pass go, impound for a week plus fines, towing and points.

Mojoe, you have a GSXR based engine & he has a GS based bike. Everyone on the same page here? Ray.

yup....I know that, Ray. I also know that there are a ton of those old "GS" based kats out there with gsxr based engines. I believe Waltari is one of them. If I am not mistaken, he has an 1127 in his old katana.

I realize that but it seemed to ME that Spyug is looking for a GS engine. That's why I asked. Ray.

**** Ray...you might be right. it was the 1000 that threw me off. I think this is actually the first time I heard someone ask for a GS 1000 engine. I was thinking the newer gixxer 1000. plus due to the fact that most who change engines in the old kats tend to go towards newer engines.

My bad...I read it wrong. Oh well....I still have some a couple of the gs 1100 engines. I would let them go REAL cheap just for the fact that I never heard them run. I was told they ran when I bought them for parts bikes, but never took the time to start them up. $200 each. guaranteed you would have one good running engine with both engines. could be they both run. $400 and you can have them both.

BONUS: I am getting my "new to me" Lund fishing boat this weekend and am considering a Niagara River fishing trip. Even if not, I do have friends up there that I could stop in and see, so pay my gas up (I pay my own back) and I might even deliver them to you.

Just something for you to consider.

I wish you were within driving distance to me, I would buy them both. Any idea how much to ship to Ca.? Nevermind, the customs would probably be insane! Ray.

400 for both engine. I would jump on that if I hadn't gotten my engine a while ago.

I paid $500 for my GS1100 with parts.

actually Ray, there would be no customs fees. all there is a $11 "surcharge" as I am considered commercial. when I ship engines to the US, I cross them myself to Vermont where I have access to a loading bay and fork lift. You can inquire about shipping from zip code 05829. if memory serves me right, the crate is around 28x24x26 and weighs around 180lbs. and seeing as I make the crate quite solid, it is stackable, which also reduces the rate.

well like I said, I never heard them run. if I did hear them run, the price would be closer to $6-700 each!

Thanks for the information. So a working GS1100 engine would be $600 or so? I'm assuming that it would not include carbs and electronics. If that is the case then it would make sense to be looking for a complete bike.

OK that tells me what I need to know.

                        I appreciate it.

                        Thanks,
                        Spyug

PS I should mention that the bike is not a keeper and the only reason I'm thinking of a bigger engine in good working order is to allow me to complete the bike without having to repair the existing tranny. I also have been led to believe the big bikes are more sought after and it may make the bike more saleable. The question now is whether or not its cost effective to do it.

imho, if you have no intentions of keeping the bike, I would just get the motor started so the prospective buyer can hear it run, and just let him know the tranny is bad. it's been my experience that you will still get a decent price for it, without having to go through all the repair hassle. for sure you will get more if it was in good working order, but you have to ask yourself if the more you get is worth all the effort.

or better yet, consider parting it out. out of curiosity, how much do you expect for this bike? let me know this and I will share my ideas on the best way to get it. I have made $2k in parts sales with an old GS550 that I wouldn't have been able to get a $1000 as a whole bike.

Thanks for the information. The bike runs fine its just that for some reason I can't shift out of first gear when its on the ground. On the jack stand it can be shifted by hand, however.

I had not thought of trying to sell it not working. I don't like the idea of passing on the problem and I'm not keen on parting out either as that can be a "protracted" effort and I've had issues selling on E-bay too. I'm not in the bike business and don't have the time to devote to that.

At this point, I'm going to pull the engine and see if I determine what's going on with the tranny. I've never worked with a bike transmission but I have several manuals and a spare 750 engine for parts (not sure of the status of that one either but its likely trash too as it looks pretty tough) so I'll try and muddle my way through it.

                            Wish me luck.

Well I may not need to pull the engine after all as it seems I have gears. I put the bike up on the lift and fired it up this afternoon. I could shift it (by hand) and eventually found 5 gears. Oddly when trying to do the same using my toes I had more difficulty and it seems there is too much slop in the shifter linkage.

I tried to shim up the pivot post/ shifter pedal but the stock I used may be too thick as it is now abit too tight. I can upshift but downshifting doesn't work without first pulling up the lever before stepping down again. I will need to play with this a bit more but this seems to be my problem and not the transmission proper.

Having sat for the last 5 or 6 months, she is not running right and won't idle off choke so I'll have to work on that again. Hopefully I can sort that for the weekend as I would like to try for a road test.

I'll let you know how that turns out.

Cheers all and thanks for the input friends.
