  • My '93 GSX600F project

    I thought I'd throw my build in here to get some feedback on what I'm doing, and at least show how not to do certain things.
    A year ago I bought a roughed up '93 GSX600F (they're not called Katana here, that name is reserved for the real Katanas). To be honest it looked like crap, and still do to some extent.


    As I got it so late in the year I drove it home and tore it apart for some service. After dealing with that I found a cheap 2nd hand Laser 4-2-1 exhaust and an undertail and some other standard modifications. Rode it all summer while collecting parts for a rebuild. Not one of the all-out projects I've seen on this site, but hopefully enough to satisfy myself.

    So far I've dug up a '91 GSXR750 cylinder and head and a set of Mikuni VM29SS flatslides to go onto my spare 600cc engine block. That should give me a bit more power than the standard 600cc engine.

    To make it stop a bit better a found a '93 GSXR750W front end (with brakes), which also came with a 5.5" rear wheel. As I couldn't let that wheel just sit in the shop I quickly bought a '98 Bandit 1200 swing arm to make it fit. The swinger isn't mounted up yet, I'm still waiting for the spacers to arrive. The frame will be modified to fit the Bandit swing and I've gotten a set of '01 GSXR600 rear sets as the standard ones wont fit once the frame is chopped for fitting the swinger.

    Other than that I've just gotten a few small things which I've happend to stumble upon on my way, '07 GSXR600 radial brake master, SRAD rev counter/speedo, a GSX750F oil cooler and '04 GSXR750 rear shock to raise the rear end a bit.

    At the moment I'm waiting for the swing arm spacers to arrive, so I can mount the swinger and figure out where to mount the rear sets.
    Next up will be fixing the plastics and perhaps find a new tail, and of course throw some paint on the frame and plastics, as they look horrible at the moment. And it wont be any better after I start cutting and welding the frame.

      Very cool. I'm in the middle of a 89 gsxf600 projet myself. I really like the gsxr front end swap, Did you run into any issues swaping it?

      I'll be checking back on this one. Nice wor,k keep the pictures coming.

        The biggest issue is the steering stops on the lower triple. The standard GSXR ones will not work very well with the GSXF frame, as it doesn't allow the front to be turned very far.
        No. 2 issue for me is instrument cluster clearance. Now I'm not 100% that this is due to the front end, as it is my brake master that hits the fuel level meter. The radial master builds more to the front than an axial (standard) one.
        I had to grind away a small amount of material on the GSXF clutch perch, to make it fit where I wanted it on the left GSXR clip on. In the end I chose to use a 07 GSXR perch, to match the brake lever.
        Other than that it's a bolt on modification.

        More pictures will be coming up, as soon as I have something new to show. With some luck the swinger spacers will show up today.

            The rear wheel is the same color, so they match... But no, probably not, as the color is horrible. The whole bike including the frame could use a bit of paint, so when everything is done I plan to get it all painted, including the wheels. That's quite far into the future right now though.

              I don't suppose you know if there's any clearance issues with the stock GSXF brake master cylinder on the GSXR bars as there is with the radial one?

                No, unfortunatly not. I never tried the stock brake cylinder. But there is quite a bit of size difference, so you might be lucky.

                I've swapped my HEL S/S brakelines over from the old front end, and noticed that the banjo bolt is different between the two brake cylinders. Right now the bike is a total mess, everything is half done. Been promised that I can pick the spacers for the swinger up on wednesday.

                  The front end is more or less done now, and I've got the rear swinger mounted into place. Now I just have to weld the holes in the frame, and some weld the cut off part of the subframe, it's a bit weak at the moment.


                  Though I've ran into some problems with the rear shock and/or linkage. My GSXR750 K4 shock wont go in there, it's way too tall. So at the moment I'm thinking of the R6 shock, as it's a bit shorter.

                  I decided to get me another set of front calipers, from a late model SRAD600 (not the 6 pots), instead of the old Nissin calipers. They look nicer and are supposed to offer better braking performance.
                  When the frame have been welded up I'll start fabricating mounting plates for the GSXR rearsets.

                  Finally decided on instrument cluster, from a GSXR oiler, so it wont hit the brake m/c. Stock push/pull cables from GSXR750 with the VM29SS carbs works fine, so far so good.

                      Found this on ebay for €40, so thought it might be worth a try and see if it fits.


                      Now I just have to find time for a workshop weekend, so I can start putting everything together. Unfortunatly I had a minor incident on my winter bike yesterday, and now my legs are all bruised.

                      In the mean time I've cleaned and rebuilt the SRAD calipers, and ordered all the small brackets, bolts, nuts and other small stuff that I need to complete the bike. I guess any progress is still progress, albeit it's going very slow.

                        Now the bike is back on the ground. With a little tweaking the R6 shock went right in and it all seems good.

                        Next big job coming up is welding the frame and making the mounting points for the rearsets.
                        I've got some pictures, but forgot the camera at a friends place so the visuals will be arriving later.
