  • What octane fuel?!

my dad says that i should only put regular or mid grade in because he says premium will burn the valves out on my 2003 katana 600. What fuel octane does everyone use?

87 will work just fine in a Katana with stock compression, absolutely. Running higher octane won't hurt anything, it just won't help anything either. Running premium won't burn your valves, it will just burn your cash up faster.

Higher octane burning up valves huh? That's a new one.

now, i have run 91 octane from shell for the last 2 years, i have read on here how like everyone has said so far all it does is burn cash faster... i just this morning switched to regular from shell. now the bike is acting like it doest like it, just like it did several months ago when i was running a little low on $$$ and put regular in it. everyone has said there is no difference. but i notice a difference every time i try to put regular in. it could be due to the mods on my bike but idk it just seems much smoother and responsive with premium

I run 93 in my bike, why? Becuase I figure it has better additives and it "may" be useful with my ignition advancer. An extra $0.50 per fill up isnt going to send me into the poor house.

I put race fuel in a lawnmower once and it melted the muffler.

High octane fuel burns slower. 110 octane could feasibly burn slow enough to still be burning as it enters the exhaust. Or the unburnt fuel from not having sufficient spark to ignite race gas could be firing up in the exhaust. Either way, I don't think you could find any gasoline engine available that would have any ill effects with premium pump gas.

I'm fully aware that you understand this already, I'm just trying to prevent your post from being used as fuel on a fire made of bulls**t.

If you're running a bit lean it will probably feel noticeably smoother on premium than on regular.

BTW- I run premium, because it makes me feel better. I know it doesn't make it faster, it's unnecessary (especially since I'm jetted too rich anyway), but I run it anyway because it's a whopping $1.00 more per tank for it, and it makes me happy.

My stock Kat that I have owned since new will ping lightly on accel using 87 octane. Pinging wastes energy and makes me uneasy about possible damage to engine parts so I use higher octane fuel.

My Kat will ping and run less responsive on 87, so I use 93. But then it does run a little lean and there are some mods, so I feel the higher octane is needed and it wont break the bank on fill up.

I prefer to spend more and get more. I don't buy cheap tires and I don't buy cheap gas. I am comparing to tires because like the better quality tires have better runout, balance and grip. They last longer and have better quality ingredients.
Fuel I understand, has better quality additives and more stringent quality control for the good stuff. I also believe the good stuff causes me less headaches in the long run. I always fill with premium and I won't park my bike without chevron 94 in it. I know an old school bike mechanic that collects and restores honda CBX's. Those are inline 6's. 6 freaking carbs. He always parks them with chevron 94 in the tank and never has to clean the carbs after he has overhauled them. Likewise my float bowls don't even have a lick of yellow in them. I believe you get what you pay for. If you want to run cheap fuel that is older stock and has had some ethanol added to get the octane back up, have at it. I am going to spend more time riding and less time messing with carbs I hope.

Even though I live at an high altitude, I usually use 91 octane because:
                              1) When we hit triple digits in the summer and I drive aggressively, she'll ping.
                              2) I often will let the bike sit before I can ride it (like between snow storms in the winter) and gas, as it sits, will lose its octane. The worst is if you let it sit for a few months with some Stabil in it. We all know how that works- bike fires up, drives kind of funky and the exhaust has a funky smell, but we do it to keep the carbs from varnishing up.
