  • Spray Paint!

Hey guys I want to paint my bike using the spray paint method. Don't really have the $$ to have a pro spray it. I want to use a nice bright orange color. So, what brand do you think would produce the best results for this? Krylon? Rustoleum? Dupli Kolor? There are others as well. Does it matter if it's an acrylic or a laquer? I saw that Rustoleum makes a "Universal" spray that they offer in a bright orange and it specifically says that it can be used on plastic. Thanks a lot for the input guys.

just got done doing mine with good ol' rattle can... rustoleom makes a great paint... but their clear, leaves a lil to be desired... i ended up switching over to krylon for the clear.. the one thing you need to consider is your tank... most rattle can jobs wont stand up to gas (ask me how i know)... so it might be a good idea to have a bodyshop paint the tank for you... if you do all the prep work, they should only charge you like 50-70 bucks for it... let me know if you have any other questions

There has been a bit of discussion on this. If you search, you'll find some opinions.

As was said, most rattle-can clears won't stand up to gas. You need a two-part clear, which you can pick up in a spray can here - http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd_2_part_2k_aerosol.cfm but you won't find it at a normal auto parts store or anything.

use the good rattle can paint ,and there is clear out now so it will not lift or crack/crows foot , from the fuel, and it looks damn good to just keep searching for good rattle can paint, but make sure you use the right primer, and clear, try to use all 1 system

duplicolor sprays nicer because they have a fan tip that comes out really nice. For the tank, you can get taht 2 part clear that LNL posted, or go with taking the tank to a autobody shop, and have them shoot it with a gas resistant clear.

and! i just learnt, that you can get certain shops to put auto paint into spray cans. who knew?!
be careful with neon colours, they fade uber fast. UBER. i sprayed mine with a neon pink last year... it's now orange.
will be painting again now. fml.

Prepping the surface to be painted is the first thing. I don't care how good the paint is you use, if the surface you are spraying it on isn't prepped correctly, it will show through on the paint job.

If you are just looking for a quick spray, just pick a color and go.

Understand that a cheap rattle can job is still a cheap job. The nice rattle can jobs you see on here aren't exactly "cheap".

Sandpaper, primer, (some use adhesion promoter), paint, clear, etc etc...it adds up quicker than you think.

                      Surface Prep:

It can't be stated enough that the quality of ANY paint job is only as good as the prep work that went into it before the paint was ever sprayed.

Use the Search > Advance Search and search for "surface and prep", "fairing and sand" etc etc.

Then bookmark those threads. There is SOOO much knowledge on this board. And in all honesty..just in the 3 years or so I've been here, I haven't seen almost any threads that were original..in other words they have been covered here, usually IN DEPTH, beforehand.

If you have a limited budget, and who doesn't, then you might want to add up the cost of:

                      - Sandpaper
                      - Masking tape (if needed)
                      - Paint
                      - Clear
                      - Primer
                      - Adhesion promoter (Some use, some don't, many paints call for it)

you might be shocked how it adds up.

Most vendors of DuPont can put any color you want of their chromapremier line into a rattle can for you, which opens up a whole other world of rattle can paint variety. Use that and the 2k 2 part rattle can clear and you'll have it made.

Sanded existing paint and colored with Krylon Fusion.
Topped it off with 2k clear.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Who makes the 2K clear?? I also noticed that Color Rite offers rattle cans as well. They run about $33.00 per can. That really makes Krylon look good! lol
