  • Afternoon on the Dyno with the Canadian Katana

Spent some time on the dyno this afternoon with the Canadian 82 1100 that I'm starting to work on. Felt a bit low on power, smelled of fuel, and HP was dropping way off at WOT. Dyno confirmed a very rich condition making only 89.7hp max and power dropping off after third gear. I haven't really dug into the bike at all yet, but did notice someone had the A/F screw out 4 TURNS (which had caused an even lower HP before the A/F adjustment). Strange considering it has an unmodified stock dual exhaust and I'm guessing a stock air filter. Looks like someone has had the carbs open at some point so I'm guessing the mains in there that are way too large. Turned the A/F screws back into 2 turns while at the dyno and lost a few HP but regaining a much better low end power band and improved idle immediately. Should have time tomorrow to actually open up the carbs and see whats going on.

Not to bad for running like crap. Wonder what it will produce when it is properly tuned?

Should be around 20HP higher. Just spoke with the owner and discovered a less than reputable shop in BC told him it'd "run much better" with new jets and charged him through the rear to do the work. Explains the stock filter, exhaust, and large mains...obviously they never tuned it (not that they knew what they were doing anyway)

Yeah they did not have a clue. Putting in larger jets does nothing for it if that is all you do.
