  • Look what I ran across...

Hey peeps! I wanted to shared with everyone my new gauges....well the start of them. I finally found these after searching and searching. I've only started on the fuel so far and haven't even really got it put back together but had to snap a pic. I know it's been done before but man!!! It's just amazing the difference it makes. I still have to paint the needle, clean the glass, and probably paint the bezel.

    New

    Old.....the difference just astounds me.

Really huge difference. I've only seen pics of it on the pre's and theres just no comparison when you put the two next to each other.

How did you go about taking them apart?

I found the templates here on KR and saved them. The scale isn't right so I had to play with the printer before I got them the size they should be. Wasn't too hard though.

Well I already have all my fairings off waiting on some decent weather to paint so things were pretty easy to get to. Unplug everything then theres only 4 philips screws holding the gauge stay on. Then two 10mm nuts holding each gauge on the stay. Once you have the gauges in hand it just takes patience. I followed I believe it was one of Kreylyns threads here on how to take them apart. Basically just take a small flat head screwdriver and gently pry the backside of the bezel all the way around until you can slip the face off. Then, the next step is to remove the needle. You want to be extremely careful with that. I used a pair of needle nose pliers and slipped them under it and gently worked it off. That's pretty much all there is to it.

Okay I looked at my gauges, but I wasn't sure how well the bezels came off without damaging them. Thanks

Looks good! Can't wait to see the full set!
How do they look at night?

And yeah, holy crap taking those gauges off is a pain in the ***!

I especially hate the odometer reset knob. I ended up taking a pair of cutters to it! (not the recommended approach if you ever want to use it again though :P )

I've put it together temporarily to see what it would look like in the dark. Not quite as bright as I would like so I'm looking into maybe a brighter bulb or leds.
I guess I got off lucky with the trip knob coz mine was already removed...haha.

I'm working on painting the bezels now so hopefully I'll have them all together by tomorrow.

I've been looking and looking too. I found it here on KR but forgot to save the link but I've got the files saved. It's not to scale though but is excellent quality. I printed them on quality heavy weight glossy paper and the image is crystal clear. I'll see if I can find the link again or post the files if you want.

I'm definetly interested the files if you can post them up. Did you save the scaling that worked for you or was it just a lot of trial and error?

Okay...not sure if the scaling will be the same or not. I scaled it with my printer instead of playing with the file size. On the printer settings I chose 5x8 index card as paper type. Then, in the effects settings I changed the percent size to print. For the fuel gauge I used 64 %, the rpm was 59%, and the speedo was 60%. I used standard size paper but with the 8.5x11 paper setting I could only reduce it 50%, hence the reason for choosing the 5x8 index card size. Hope this helps. Btw, I got those percents by trial and error so they may not work for all printers.

That's awesome. Should get me within a few percent. Now I'm going to look for the files. Thanks.
